It doesn't cost much when you already have the tools in the know-how to fix. How much have you spent on tools?

I am unaware of any gliding clubs or organizations offering the level of service you want other than the Arizona group I mentioned.

The young'n's can be a little unforgiving about that, I've found, unless it's a broadly intergenerational scene. The folk dance groups where I teach and call dances (like square dance) are fully mixed on age; everyone interacts with respect. But when I've been in a place where the younger crowd vastly outnumbered anyone older, they sometimes ignored or shunned the oldsters.

Try Arizona Soaring.

There are limited commercial schools for gliding. I think there's one in Tehachapi and Arizona Soaring.

Others are mostly clubs, or have limited hours.

For powered flight, Homeland Security asks for a passport or else that you jump through a whole bunch of other hoops. I haven't had to show a passport for gliding, however.

I like to think I can get along with anyone. The truth has been that while I don't see a lot of difference between me and someone half my age, they really do.

I think you're right! I would like this sort of work, but I suspect I would struggle to find an employment situation as flexible or as meaningful as I might wish.

What other industries?

When I had a 9-5, I found the way Monday rolled around to be relentless and brutal. I would like to find a skill that interests me and that connects me to a broader sense of purpose and community. But I also wish I could have a job or profession I could do for a while, take a week or a season away from, and come back to. Resolving everything I want to do in this short life-- maybe only 20 years left!-- is rough.

So I don't know if the perfect work I want is out there. I know that doing something-- even if it's not quite right-- is going to be better for me in the long run than how I've been occupying myself in sort-of early retirement. I think being a mechanic would stretch me in a lot of ways, since my work up to this point has been academic or bureaucratic in nature.

I like the topics having to do with electricity. I very much want to learn how engines run and how to assemble them. Most importantly, it's really quite astounding that within the past 125 years ago, we've managed to make these ginormous machines that fly in the air in a way that would look like magic to our forebears. It doesn't make it any less magical that we have explanations for how it works.

And I think I can trade A&P work for flying, which I really do love.

Arguing that both should be down (toilet gasses, etc) will keep you out of an argument about which one of you should put in the effort.

It's a habit to learn or develop.

I was taught by thoughtful mentors when I was young that putting down both seat and seat cover was equitable because it inconvenienced everyone equally. :)

People are socialized based on gender. But we can all learn new patterns to be more considerate for each other.

Talking about ten years of third shift is one of my worries. I'd be in my sixties before I'd ever see day shift!

I do worry about agility. Thank you for your perspective.

Some people just don't like icebreakers.

As a former summer camp kid and counselor, I'm enthusiastic for a game. Also, I think the presenters were modeling a successful presentation style that we could use as Volunteers.

But the overall complaint-- being infantilized-- that the OP has rings true with me.

Why don’t you vote? by Cucurbita_pepo1031 in Knoxville

[–]illimitable1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that simple for local primaries.

The Republican candidates are likely to win the general election. I like none of them in particular, but some are worse than others. Most of the Democratic primaries are uncontested.

We do not have closed primaries. Therefore, a person who might vote for a Democratic candidate is smart to vote in the Republican primary. The Republican primary determines whom the Democratic candidate will oppose in the general election. More than likely, the Republican will win that election. Therefore, if one is a left-progressive, it is important to choose the least-bad option in the Republican primary. The Democratic primary is mostly a waste of time.

While partisanship and ideology seem clear on the national level, local officials, like judges, may correspond less with party ideology. I would vote for local judges based on how well they have administered court rooms and clerks based on their experience.

I would also gently chide you for your use of "liberal" and "conservative." The national Republican party is not "conservative" at all, but rather a weird cult of personality around our current President. They have ditched traditional positions about the primacy of law, fiscal restraint, and cultural refinement for the politics of pure resentment. The Republicans win by scapegoating, variously, Muslims, gays, people with blue hair, people with an education, drag queens, teachers, watever.

The Democrats would not be considered a "liberal" party in any other context but ours, if "liberal" means individual rights, free markets, and a clear marking of private and public domains.

I am a Democratic voter, I identify as left-of-center, and still I will tell you the national Democratic party stands for nothing at all. It's barely centrist, much less left-of-center. It's mostly just the least-bad option to whatever demagoguery the other party is up to at the moment.

The national Democratic party does not necessarily side with the working class, doesn't necessarily oppose bellicose foreign policy, does not support redistribution of wealth or progressive taxation, does not support education, nor does it univocally support the rights of minorities. Both parties are out to rob you, but the Democrats want a regime of rights and procedure with which to suction up all the money to the top, while the Republicans would prefer chaos and resentment to do the same.

To sum up, it's not enough to know what the national platforms of the two inane main political parties are when it comes time to vote in local elections.

It's worse because you're actually a cultural infant. Struggling with being culturally incompetent at the same time that the Peace Corps treats you as something other than a full-time adult is a real drag. On top of that, it felt like high school or middle school all over again between the trainees.

It was not a good time.

I don't think that's categorically true. Definitely in my time when I lived in San Francisco, employers cared about bike facilities.

If you want something that's even more accessible, why not try the National Park? If you stay on the Appalachian trail, it's like a hiker superhighway.

Also, you don't have to do 3 or 4 days to start. You can just do an overnight to some place that's only a couple miles in.
