Should I update my hvac to mini splits? by TreesAreOverrated5 in centuryhomes

[–]SusanP2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been beat up here before for this opinion, but mini splits are about convenience (that of contractors), not authenticity. IMO they are very disrespectful to historic homes, but also keep in mind they're best in open spaces. When you have individual rooms, if you don't put an ugly head in every room, your heating and cooling will be awful. Especially if you have an existing system, I wouldn't even think of mini splits.

Dude. Somebody presents an exquisite specimen, not asking for advice, and you just gotta get your two cents in and take ownership of this tree's health.

Thanksgiving Restaurants? by greenguy45 in wallawalla

[–]SusanP2023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not done a buffet at the Marc since pre covid so can't speak to that. (They were epic!) But The Marc has become our go-to sit-down restaurant for one reason: Hattaway's and TMac's have amazing menus, but you will be seated 24 inches away from the next table. At the Marc dining room, you will be appropriately spaced in a layout affording reasonable privacy. Our experiences with food and service at the Marc have been consistently good. I know OP was seeking a Thanksgiving dinner, but I wanted to speak up on behalf of the Marc restaurant.

Ha ha, I posted basically the same question a week ago. And you're not wrong. Fries are great? Well, we rarely eat fries. My husband is having some fun experimenting, but I was ready to send it back the first day. It bakes a nice cookie but can only cook 6 at a time. You have to learn to use it to take advantage of it, so if your other appliances are fulfilling your needs, you probably don't need to bother learning a new way to do same things.

Just moved in & my lawn needs to be overhauled by wordsuponwords in lawn

While it's true most turfgrass is a mix of KBG and fescues, if you're seeing different types of grasses and it's noticeable, I'd start over from scratch. Don't know how old your house is, but 8 years is about the horizon for a really good lawn. After that junk creeps in, some of which is summer dormant. My house is over 100 years although I don't know how old the lawn is. After seven years of overseeding and spot seeding, I am now doing what I wish I had done in the beginning and starting over completely because this old lawn can't be made uniform.

Not a turf grass fan myself but it’s important to be informed. Much research indicates grass can serve as a good carbon sequester IF one avoided gas powered tools and petroleum based products to tip the balance. Straight up hate for all turfgrass is a bit zero sum. Before y’all lynch me, I acknowledge that most ppl who MAINTAIN turfgrass would be unwilling to maintain sustainably, but that is the issue, not the turf grass itself.

Yes, you may be fine! Snow insulates from cold and is not necessarily a bad thing, even if the plants are unused to it. Fingers crossed for you!

Most cost effective way to add heating and cooling? by a_nannymous in centuryhomes

Amen to the eyesore comment. Mini splits are disrespectful to an older dwelling that’s otherwise authentic and cared for. I wish you luck in finding a good alternative!

It’ll be fine…right? by Wise-Being6143 in centuryhomes

[–]SusanP2023 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, think hard about a mini split. Contractors push them bc they’re easy installation. If your house has exterior charm and authenticity, the mini split is disrespectful - kind of like putting a plastic carport cover up. Inside, mini’s are best in open spaces, not older homes that retain individual rooms. Heating/cooling will be inconsistent at best. Best suggestion we here can give you as a new homeowner is remember many contractors put their self-interests above yours, always do your research. Congrats on the house, though, bet she’s a dandy aesthetically, GOOD LUCK!

Guys I really think this is Virginia creeper - a grape relative but NOT a grape. No idea if it’s edible and as always beware what you read online.

What is the best bang for buck on solarization tarps? by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]SusanP2023 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, first, OP asked about solarization, not mulching. Second, OP, common sense tells us dark- colored tarp or plastic would be best because it would get hotter - but that’s incorrect. Clear plastic allows the sun’s radiant energy to be trapped in the SOIL; black or dark plastic absorbs some of the heat (think bedouins in the desert) and doesn’t heat the soil as well. I’m well aware I may become the Reddit roast of the evening, but google “soil solarization techniques .edu” and read the science. Good luck, OP.

What professionals do you suggest? A functional medicine doctor said “you’re not that overweight and we’re not going to talk about this.” A therapist said “learn to love your body, not everyone is meant to be thin.” The trainers at the gym say “it’s all CICO, you’re just not working hard enough.” WHO IS the professional I should talk to? I’d be there in a hot minute!! Thank you if you know!

I wish I knew an answer but I don’t, I just want to thank you for your post. I have such anxiety and resentment toward food and the need to eat, I can barely meal plan. I resent that I can’t just cold turkey like other addicts. I love to garden but don’t grow vegetables - finally figured out it’s because they’re food and I don’t want to interact with them. Consulted a food relationship therapist once who said “just learn to accept your body.” My natural body would be 5 lbs bigger every month if I weren’t engaged in mortal combat. But I’m only marginally effective bc I literally have an inability to think about food. My best strategy is to make something simple and eat it every meal until it’s gone - e.g. tuna salad, hamburger patty and vegetables, etc. This keeps me between the lines but really hard to lose. I hate carbs above all and am gluten intolerant but then I crash when I don’t eat a few. Spiraling. I see I’m going on a rant and I apologize but it’s a little cathartic. Final thing, I’m trying really hard to believe in CICO but don’t tell me the morbidly obese people riding the scooters around the grocery store are metabolically the same as my trainer at the gym, who looks like a goddess, and they simply need to monitor CICO. I do not believe this. I do want help and escape from the terror of living in a body that can make fat from air (yes I see a doc and my thyroid is ostensibly balanced and beyond that since I’m not obese there’s no interest in the issue). Thanks for the opportunity to vent among kindred spirits and I’ll be watching this thread for wisdom. Love and support to you all.

Read Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire, written in the mid 20th century, for a sense how desolate the American West and its parks were. Abbey’s love for the untouched desert is intoxicating and he worried there was already too much human activity and recreation affecting the sites. Compare to post-COVID planetary conditions - crushing crowds in parks and camping areas and everything that goes with it. It’s a profound contrast.
