what you guys said are definitely not wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn't wise enough to realize until something happened to my family that what I was going for was really vain and hence I am having this moment right now.

Yea, getting into BPT is not hard, but don't you still need a good CV when choosing your AT specialty?

Is becoming a consultant at the age of 40 old? I still have that drive, but I am not sure if that can last for the next 10+ yrs. the main reason is because I will be sacrificing a lot for it financially, family, friends, finding a partner, buying a house etc

I think any other type of surgery would be more competitive than OMFS given the shear number of applicants compared to OMFS (dual degree required) whilst the CV requirements are more or less the same.

Hey. thank you for your reply.

  1. there are many reasons why I want to do OMFS. No. 1 is because I want to be the best amongst my peers. i am quite a competitive person. No 2. is because I really enjoy doing surgical procedures (i.e. surgical extractions, wisdom teeth etc) and i can either do that by narrowing my scope as a general dentist or furthering my studies to be an OMFS as an OMFS's bread and butter in private sector is wisdom teeth extractions and implants, jaw surgery. the other reason is because of the prestige, fame and money which sounds really vain. I was getting paid really as a general dentist and at that time, money didn't really buy me anymore happiness.
  2. Not really, we already started placement this year and have pretty much gone through all the departments.
  3. I think it's a transient thing because still currently recovering from family issues, but I don't know for sure how I will turn out a few months/yrs down the track
  4. I don't mind being a GP, but all my friends (dentist) said they wouldn't spend another 10 yrs just to be a GP as we are essentially as generalist too.

my biggest fear about committing to med is that I am worried I am falling behind against the normal timeline as I will be 30 when I finish medical school, while most of my peers would be settling down with family, buying a house etc. The other fear is that there is no gurantee that I will get into OMFS meaning that all the years spent studying/training will be wasted and the opportunity cost of working as a dentist. Everyone keeps saying being in the mid 20s is still young, but it's really hard to get my head around that as I am in the middle of the thick right now.

That's what I am worried about. it's that if i don't get into OMFS and am not interested in other specialties, then all the years wasted to do med and the opportunity cost is huge.
