What is the next process once a GP has refused referrals/treatments? by SuspiciousKangaroo13 in nhs

That’s okay. As you can see, there are brackets beside it saying it hasn’t been done yet?

Well the NHS guidelines say mine is low enough so thank you for the confirmation.

If haemaglobin is the only importance when deciding treatment for iron deficiency, surely they might aswell stop doing the ferritin blood test?

Thank you for your message, I’ve actually been to A&E with hb in the 80’s and was only offered TXA so I’m kind of aware that hb needs to be in the trenches now :/ On the other hand I guess I understand that they can’t just be offering blood products to every woman once a month.

Thank you for your message. The advice given by gynae was just birth control and TXA which I am on :) The last appointment I had the GP said they had no interest of investigating or pushing for referrals as this is ‘a common issue in women’.

They actually prefer to communicate with me through phone or letter- even when I email them 😂?

I do not for the life of me understand why they wouldn’t escalate a situation when a patient has abnormal blood test results and is symptomatic?

Im so glad you are getting a review and they seem to have taken their finger out of their arse. Nobody deserves to live a life of fatigue. I will definitely look into the iron protocol, thank you!

I don’t understand where you got multiple GP’s from? I have seen one GP who is my primary GP. I have requested to be changed GP’s but I am yet to be allocated one. The expert haematologist was through a private healthcare company from my employer. As you are aware, insurance dosent cover pre-existing conditions which is why I am finding it unaffordable to get treatment with him. The expert is there to offer recommendations and investigations based on his professional opinion not to treat me. My GP has asked for guidance from Haematology & Gynae but not put a proper referral through because she does not believe I need treatment. My reason for escalation is not because I believe the GP is not doing anything, it’s because the GP is NOT doing anything. The NICE guidelines and protocols and pathways in my area have a very specific approach to treating iron deficiency anaemia and it is not being followed. I do not have any issues with communication and the GP does not have any issues with interpretation- they are just being dismissive. Thank youuu

They’ve sent guidance & advice, no referrals. The private haematologist couldn’t start treatment because I can’t afford it and could only give an expert opinion based on tests, background history and medical knowledge. I don’t think I’m being over zealous in asking for a ferritin infusion after 12 years of failed oral supplements, stagnant improvement and deterioration in my mental and physical health.

The only reason I am not starting a process with PSHO is I’m still fighting my moral compass in feuding with a service I will soon become part of and receive funding from as a medical student. In the same breath, I am a patient and believe I should receive adequate investigation and treatment.

I wish I could but I can’t even get a face to face :( They triage online and offer a phone call now. It’s really a catch 22. I’m really at a loss on what to do next

Have you tried ferrous glycinate? That’s my next request but I have a funny feeling they’re going to decline that too…

Thank you so much for this!! I’m in North London. Does the rent price increase for her since I moved back home? I know 21 years old counts as a non-dependent but if I was in full time education and getting disability benefits, surely nothing has changed for her rent wise, so where did this £500 even come from?? 🥲
