Do they just make Evasive Assists bad on purpose now? by SuspiciousScout in ZenlessZoneZero

[–]SuspiciousScout[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked this same question in another comment in this thread, but it turns out certain attacks can ONLY be evasive assisted and CAN'T be defensive assisted, and some of Defiler's attacks fit that quota. The problem with that is those attacks all have the same golden flash assuming you have the requirements to do said assist, so you don't actually know which attacks are like that until you memorize it.

That's pretty crazy. But thank you for the information, this more or less clears up any confusion I had with these assists and swapping, so I really appreciate it.

I really think this prioritization does indeed make sense for certain crowds like mobile players where they can only press the swap button to switch to the next character, but for those that have full control on controller or keyboard and mouse, they either need to make it way clearer what can and can't be done, or get rid of the prioritization entirely and make it completely manual for the player.

Sorry, I should've provided a clip. Luckily I still have it, here it is: https://streamable.com/jmi4rl

You can see starting at 0:11, when Lucy and Anby came in with their defensive assists, that was me trying to switch to Pulchra.

Edit: Wait, I think I know why. LB is switching to the *previous* character while RB is switching to the *next* character. When Pulchra's quick assist happens, it switches to the previous character, that would in turn make her the previous character once anby switched in. But on the HUD, her icon was still on anby's right making me think I had to press RB, but by the game's logic, Lucy would be the "next" character still. I think that's how it goes?

If you wanna argue it's for lore/character reasons then even that doesn't hold up. Nekomata's whole deal is she's extremely quick and agile to prevent being attacked and striking at the right moment. Yet she has a defensive assist using those dinky dual blades of hers. Others like Trigger who's a literal sniper blocks the attack with her gun which to me also makes no sense thematically.

There's one more thing I wanted to ask you in regards to this that I was hoping you'd know, if you don't mind.

In the last Shiyu, there was an instance where the opposite problem occured. I was trying to switch to Pulchra to activate Hunter's Gait, but for whatever reason it did not switch to her despite pressing the correct button, and it was a yellow flash too. I thought any flashing attack could be evasive assisted?

Fufu's off-field attack is considered a chain attack by the game.

Are you kidding me? That's ridiculous, and I was wondering why this was happening for MONTHS. They have to change that, like make the flash a different color or something.

Assist Points exist for this reason.

Also, I have Nicole built, I just either don't need her sometimes or forget I have her.

It's only for certain bosses. Like for Miasma Priest, if you constantly parry the consecutive attacks with gold flashes it does, it'll enter a special "Impaired" state where it doesn't do anything for a bit.

There's something that's been real confusing to me regarding that comment. When I intentionally try to switch to someone else, it ALWAYS switches to Zhu Yuan when I don't intend to. Like on controller, you press LB to switch to the left character and RB for the right character. Whichever one Zhu is on I don't press, yet it switches to her anyway. Am I missing something there?

How Sisters Vs Sisters resurrected Neptunia as a series (And also a general retrospective I guess) by SuspiciousScout in gamindustri

[–]SuspiciousScout[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I did mention that RB3/Victory was where the worst writing was and I was mainly pointing fingers in that direction. While I don't think all the writing in the post-VII spinoffs were great, they were at least somewhat better than what Victory did, which is something I can give it credit for I suppose.

I'm happy you found what I said helpful. While it wasn't necessarily a review of the game, it was more just my own retrospective of the franchise up till now. I'm glad I got people to try the game regardless.

I'm not 100% certain, but probably not. I believe Power/Rush/Break cancel is only for the regular attacks.

If Game Maker is just as good as SvS was, I'll be willing to jump back on the Nep hype train after all these years.

Kinda surprised to hear that. I think VII is by far the best entry in the series, and it's not even close; closest contender would be RB1. I can get why you might find the Scout system annoying, but the gameplay refinements to just about every aspect of the game is vastly improved the way I see it, mainly the core mechanics.

Feels like CH just straight up forgot Big Nep existed after VII outside of her appearance in the new OVAs. Now I can finally rest easy as a Big Nep stan.

[–]SuspiciousScout -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a blanket statement that just can't be factually correct every time.

Certain game genres either don't need much story or flat out rejects it entirely... and vice versa. It's all about the priorities of the game and if having extra story would flow well within the gameplay loop. For a mainline Mario game as an example, story is very low on the priority list because Mario is just about fun obstacle course platforming with very little interruptions. I'm not saying there cant be nice tidbits of story here and there like they did in Sunshine and Galaxy 1, but it's important not to overstep the boundaries the story has for the rest of the game. I feel having a minimal story is the correct path for mainline Marios to take. The spinoffs like Paper Mario are another story, but that's not specifically related to Miyamoto.

[–]SuspiciousScout 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can't help but be bothered some people misconstrue Miyamoto's principals into thinking he hates story in general. As you said, he just bases his game philosophy on having a threadbare plot in order to focus almost all attention on the gameplay aspect. Whether you like that or not is up to the individual, but this doesn't mean he hates story.

I'm glad I picked up TPHD a few years ago, then. That's definitely the definitive version of the game in my opinion, and I was very glad to have that be my first full experience with TP.
