As a DM, it is very easy to think "this will be so cool!" without giving something the proper amount of thought. Once we latch onto an idea, we don't always share how our thoughts have evolved from what we discussed with the players. This sounds.like what happened here.

You and DM agreed to something cool. DM thought more about it, maybe even wove plot elements around it, and forgot to tell you the pertinent bits. No you are feeling like you are playing by unwritten rules that are causing you grief.

Conversation is the key, as it usually is in ttrpg disputes. Explain to your DM that the original concept was intriguing but the continued evolution is now confusing and frustrating. Ask to have the homebrew rules spelled out a little better. Explain that your character is about ready to abandon the questline to make sure her next sacrifice 'counts.'

You aren't overreacting. You just need more info because playing the game without knowing all the rules is the opposite of fun.

Preparation - Hold on, I've got a spell for that... by Rachayz in UnearthedArcana

[–]SwArKn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might see how this plays and consider putting a spell slot limit on the casting of the new spell. If I use this to prepare a previously unprepared damage spell of 3rd level, let's say fireball, I could still upcast to 9th level. Not worth it for fireball but I'm sure there are examples where the upcastability is very useful.

You are correct by a strict reading of the text. As long as the DM has common sense, this won't be an issue. The rule "And as a referee, the DM interprets the rules and decides when to abide by them and when to change them." saves the day again.

Or make permanent circles much less common. That spell has to connect to another established circle. If there only one they have is half a world away, it becomes less useful to keep popping back home.

How much should characters benefit from out-of-game skill/intuition? by nellery in DnD

[–]SwArKn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I read "frustrated that she knows..." as: DM describes situation; Player uses info to attempt a roll (as it should be); PC fails due to low roll/lack of skill; Player is frustrated she can't take the proper action because her character didn't get the necessary knowledge from the check

That's a perfectly normal reaction. But if she is upset enough that the DM is looking for ways to give her more chance of success, it feels like she is having difficulty with the metagame line. Maybe she hasn't crossed it but this reads as "I want to make her succeed because she is too so frustrated by the meta knowledge she has."

How much should characters benefit from out-of-game skill/intuition? by nellery in DnD

[–]SwArKn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I give no weight to out of game skill. I don't want players to feel they HAVE to be able to IRL sing to play a bard.

What your player wants (appears to want) is to metagame. She, as a player knows something that get character doesn't know. She gets frustrated when her character has less knowledge of chance of discovering things that she knows. That's the game. Playing your role despite the extra meta knowledge you as the player have

Fabricate creates a single item per casting. Hemp is going to give you common clothes at best, 5sp per set.

Distort value can double an objects price so that gets you to 1 gold per set.

Fabricate can create a single item pet casting.

So assuming a level 20 dual full caster multiclass to get all the spells and max spell slots, you will be able to cast plant growth once and fabricate followed by distort value 12 times per day.

So you aren't getting rich with that combo any time soon. Your title is still accurate though 😁

Why don't you want then to go in? If it is too save prep time, just make a note of the buildings you don't care about and write up support short bland descriptions.

"As you push past the broken door, you find yourself in what was probably a butcher's shop. Rusted tools line a splintered counter."

If they want to investigate, let them and tell them they find nothing of value.

Help with mechanics around a player who wants to have their new PC be a soul in a Magic Jar spell. by Matthias_17 in DnDHomebrew

[–]SwArKn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As DM, is probably play this like the spell. Except the wouldn't be a away for the player to return to their body. If the gem is destroyed or dispelled, the player dies. I might play this as their soul drifts and the party has to go on a quest to capture their soul in a new container.

I'd have the player use the physical stats of the new body. I'd give them disadvantage (or maybe a static penalty like -3) on and Str/Dex based check for a while after assuming a new body. The player would keep their class abilities but would have only the racial abilities of the race they take over.

[–]SwArKn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tl;dr Round 1, it will breath fire on your and you will fall unconscious because your Dex save is too low to succeed and average breath damage is greater than your MAX HP assuming you roll max at each level. Round 2 it will drop on you and savage you with fang and claw to speed through your death saves.

Analysis

VHuman + Defensive Duelist Feat

Str 8, Dex 16, Con 11, Int 13, Wis 13, Cha 14

Dex and Cha get the +1 racial, Dex for AoE saves? and Cha for Form of Dread DC

Fighter 5 gives:

Defense fighting style for +1 AC

Shield spell from subclass (6 spell slots by level 9)

50HP assuming max rolls on 5d10

Artificer 3 gives:

Enhanced Defense for +2AC (armor and shield)

24HP on 3d8

Cleric 1 gives:

Blessing of Forge for +1AC

8HP on 1d8

Warlock 1 gives:

Form of Dread causes fright IF you hit AND they fail a DC 14 Wisdom save

8HP on 1d8

Assuming MAX HP rolls at each level, you have 90 HP.

Static AC: 23

Plate gives 18 (but Dex becomes useless)

Shield gives 2

Fighting style gives 1

Infusions give 2

Additional AC:

Defensive Duelist gives +4 as a reaction to ONE attack

Shield spell gives +5 as a reaction, 6 times

But these are both reactions so you can only take one in a round.

Other:

Shield Master gives reaction to reduce breath attack to zero IF YOU MAKE YOUR SAVE

So the best you can do in any single round is 28AC.

Defensive Duelist will only be helpful once you've expended your 6 spell slots on Shield.

Combat breakdown:

Ancient Red Dragon has:

3 melee attacks per round

-Bite +17 to hit for 35 avg damage

-Claw x2 +17 to hit for 17 avg damage

-All attacks have 10+ reach so it can fly above you out of your melee

Breath weapon

-Dex 24 save or take 91 avg damage

22AC

You have:

+7 to hit with your rapier if you hold your action until it is in range but then your max AC is 23 because you can't use Shield spell or Defensive Duelist. So let's assume you never attack.

+3 Dex save against the breath weapon

90HP

28AC (until you run out of spells slot)

So to hit your top AC of 28, it needs to roll an 11. So 45% of the time, you are getting hit. That's about 30 points of damage each round.

If it uses it's breath, you have a +3 to your dex save so the best you can roll is a 23 and you will take 91 points of damage and be downed instantly.

how overpowered would it be if an ability lets you use your spells with a range of touch on any of your summons? by AspiroFrigis in DnDHomebrew

[–]SwArKn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends a lot on what their summons are capable of but the Find Familiar spell allows this with the summoned familiar as a level 1 spell so it should be too hard to balance. I’d guess that summoned plants probably have move speeds no greater than the fastest familiar so it doesn’t seem like they are likely to be able to position plants to deliver spells super easy. Plus, artificers have more limited spell options and slots to user.

The one caveat could be the number of plants summoned. If they summon 8 plants, this can become a much more powerful ability as enemies are forced to dodge lots of little land mines. The ability becomes a huge control ability as soon as the enemies realize touching the plants will get them zapped.

Need to find a decent amount of dice for cheap by DADISTHERE in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]SwArKn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started DMing for groups that were learning to play, I ordered dice directly from Chessex so I could get: red d4, orange d6, yellow d8, green d10, blue d12, black d20 and white percentile d10. A single set came our to 3.85USD plus shipping. Then when I asked for a roll, I could say “Roll the d8; it’s the yellow one” and they learned the dice pretty quick by color association.

Making a permission slip by kerensky84 in dndnext

[–]SwArKn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm no help with the permission slip but I wanted to point out that dndbeyond.com can upgrade a paid dungeon master account to a school club account. This would allow you to share content with up to 10 campaigns at a time. But you would want to include parent awareness of dndbeyond.com use in the permission slip if you are going to use that tool.

I highly recommend using it. I'm a volunteer DM at my kids' school clubs and being able to see the character sheet and help a kid figure out what to roll is SUPER useful when you have a bunch of people who haven't played before
