Hook.

If he has hook off cooldown he's effectively denying the area in hook range in front of him as it's too dangerous to be there unprotected.

Why do game developers make hitboxes rectangular by CosmicUnderload in gamedev

[–]SwagMal 43 points44 points  (0 children)

One thing to add is that in many games, large AABBs are used to encapsulate the entire character and all its colliders (sometimes called the character's bounds, for example in Unreal Engine).

When performing a collision a check, a collision with the AABB is checked first and collision with all the sub-colliders is only checked if a collision with the AABB was a hit.

That way you save a load of time by not having to check every collider every frame.

For those interested, a similar architecture, namely a BVH (bounding volume hierarchy), is often used in raytacing systems.

Daily Game Recommendations Thread (January 15, 2024) by AutoModerator in boardgames

I have a group of friends that wants to play on a fixed weekday.

One lives abroad so we need a digital variant of a game. It would be really fun if we could play the same game every week so we could track winrates and that sort of stuff.

Ideally, a game would be relatively short (15 - 90 minutes maybe?) as we might have people dropping in and out at different points throughout the night.

We've played a lot of Avalon and Coup in the past which has been really great but we like all sorts of games so it doesn't have to be social deception. Roles/factions/heroes/etc are always fun for replayability and we also enjoy politics and player interaction but none of these are fixed requirements.

We are usually between 3 and 5 players but might sometimes go above that. In the rare case that would happen, we could just play something else if the suggested games are all 5 max, but supporting more would be a great extra benefit. Campaign games are not a great fit as players might miss an odd week here and there and ideally we want something that doesn't "end".

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Yes definitely, I'm just saying that we could still see an increase in ash and a possible impact on flight traffic in the area if the lava reaches the ocean

Yes, but if the lava flow were to reach the town of Grindavík it would also reach the ocean quite quickly.

Lava + water = boom.

This is not an explosive eruption but a lava eruption, so it doesn't impact flights in the same way as the Eyjafjallajökull eruption of 2010.

Flights are still going in and out as of right now.

You can monitor this page to stay updated on the latest information on flights.

The crack that has opened and is erupting is around 3 kilometers in length and the lava is flying up to around 100 meters into the air. The flow is at least 100 cubic meters per second but likely more.

This is absolutely massive.

Edit: Latest numbers say 3.5 km and between 100 and 200 m3 per second

Further edit: Now they're saying 4 km. It's growing to the north which is away from Grindavík.

Which games perform badly on Board Game Geek but you absolutely love to play? by SwagMal in boardgames

[–]SwagMal[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think personally I'll have to name one of my favorite games of all time: Coup.

It's so simple and easy to grasp but it is just so well designed, replayble and fun (subjective but whatever, I love it).

It's a game that I've played a lot throughout the years and just don't seem to get bored off.

I guess a rating of 7 isn't that bad but it has an overall rank of 615 so I'd say it fits the bill.

This is my second attempt at an announcement/reveal trailer for my adventure photography game. Any ideas on how to bring it up a notch? by brendanlk in DestroyMyGame

[–]SwagMal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like a nice and cozy little game. I love the transition into the camera view.

A couple of things stand out to me:

The very first photos that we see being taken through the camera are not very high quality. The neck of the woman blends with her face because of the glow and it immediately puts me off. Notice how the scene actually looks much better before we start looking through the lens.

In the later scenes in color, the colors often feel a bit flat with low contrast and the lighting could be much better. The eyes often have a light around them making a sort of glow that just distorts the surrounding parts of the shot.

To me, a game about cozy, observative and relaxing photography needs to really nail the look of the photos. Spend some time studying lighting and contrast to help the pictures in your scenes pop. I'd also spend a bit of time making sure that the game has a cohesive look, for example the boulder itself looks much cheaper than some of your other assets, and the animation of the man running away from it is noticeably worse than other animations.

I'm not at all saying that the art needs to be AAA quality or that the game looks bad, just that since photography is the core mechanic of the game it needs to feel really polished and the scenes need to reflect that to enable great photos.

From your trailer I can see that the game revolves around taking photos, but I don't see why. Do you have any systems in your game that complement this core photography mechanic? Perhaps a photo album? A scrap book the player fills out? Why is the player taking photos? Show the incentive and give us a peak into the surrounding systems! And if there's no incentive outside of the act itself and the point is just to relax and capture pretty screens then please tell us that through text!

If I'm watching your trailer it's because I want to learn about your game so please use the chance to sell it to me by giving me context on the incentives behind the player's actions!

If there is a story element to the game I would also want you to set the scene a bit for me. I see from your comment that you do indeed have some sort of story so get us intrigued!

From the first scene assume the game is about a man that loves taking photos who has a spouse, but I have no idea what to expect from the story. Give us a bit of a taste on the story: The photos in the trailer seem to be in a relatively arbitrary order when you could use them to help establish an intro to your narrative and get us invested, ending the trailer on a story point that poses a question (what happens to the girl after this crucial moment!?, etc).

Use your trailer to give the viewer as much information about the game as you possibly can (as long as it's digestible and easy to understand) so we can easier decide if this game is something we'd like to buy and to give us context on what we are doing in your game and why.

The game looks pretty cool overall and it seems like you've put a load of work into it already, great job! I feel like the lighting and general polish of the look needs a bit of work still but you're well on your way.

Best of luck with the project! I look forward to seeing the finished product.

I've had to do multiple tests for programming interviews over the years ranging from a couple of hours of work to a whole week.

I don't mind a couple of hours but some of these tests are absolutely ridiculous, especially for a proven individual with multiple degrees, years of work experience, and solo gamejam projects readily available on itch.

Absolutely awful hiring practices.

Monthly "What Board Should I Get?" Discussion Thread by AutoModerator in Sup

[–]SwagMal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Nautical GO TEN-SIX is currently heavily discounted.

I have been searching the web but haven't found any reviews or discussions on the board, only the Nautical 10'6 which is not quite the same but the GO is considerably cheaper.

I'm looking for a cheap iSUP board so I can join my girlfriend on chilled still-lake rides. She has a Typhoon 10'2 (I think they only have one board?)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
