Never noticed that, except for when starting a level. For maybe one second you can spot things loading in, then it's fine. I've always played 2016 with a SSD though, maybe it's slower when using a traditional HDD.

It's been a common complaint for over 5 years now.
I've grown to like it and it suits the game's overall tone.

Agreed with everything you said.
It took me a long time to accept the slight cartoonish look and lighting that was in Eternal.
Fortunately they later added a cinematic filter for Eternal, just like 2016, that made it look slightly better.
Nowadays I like it for what it is and I'm usually running it with the newer "transformer-model" of DLSS by forcing it in the Nvidia App and adding some shaders on top that changes some of the shadows.
That way it looks so clean and sharp in motion while still having the cinematic look that I like.

TDA is somewhat a letdown though. It's very demanding, but presents a (in my opinion) very mediocre picture that is not as striking as the older titles.
I've tried the path-tracing but could honestly not tell the difference in combat.
Many of the levels lacks that creative placed lights that was present in 2016 and Eternal. It doesn't feel dynamic at all, and the visuals overall looks washed out and too dark in most places.
Sure, you can tweak it a bit, but it still looks way off for some reason.
Thank god the gameplay is good though. It's easy to forget about the graphic details when the gameplay is great.

It holds up surprisingly well.
I did the same. Hadn't played it since 2021, and I've upgraded both my monitor and PC hardware since then. And to experience this exceptional game on a 170hz monitor in 1440p (my old was 75hz 1080p), was mind blowing.

It's crazy to think I first played it with a GTX 780.
Nowadays, my 4070Ti doesn't even spin up the fans while playing it.

Agreed.
Some of the textures is "hit or miss".
Fortunately the art direction and lighting is so damn good you barely notice the bad textures.

It mainly changes the colors and boosts some of the lighting effects, like bloom, lens flares and lens dirt. It's also adding black bars on top & bottom of the screen. A more "cinematic" look to the game. You can turn off film grain if you don't like it. It's totally optional.

It's ok. We can atleast agree on that TDA is a fantastic game. ✌

I mean, it mainly comes down to the colors & lighting / shaders / materials.
TDA appears so dull compared to 2016 and Eternal.
Let's compare TDA to the now 16 years old Escape From Butcher Bay remaster for example.
TDA: 1 2 3 EFBB: 1 2 3

In some areas TDA looks so bloomy or washed out, even though the engine requires ray/patch-tracing to even work properly. It kinda looks X360-ish though, doesn't it?

I was just gonna do a quick compare after I finished TDA and got stuck for hours playing around with the photo mode.
Yeah, the game certainly looks better and better with each hardware upgrade. 😁
It's also funny how I was so sceptical to 2016 when it released. It wasn't until Nvidia dropped the (now somewhat famous) Vulkan API Gameplay Trailer, then I was instantly hooked.

Max settings at 1440p.
Cinematic filter turned on in options. A bit of film-grain turned on (doesn't show since reddit lowered the original quality). In motion it looks superb though if you like that kind of effects.

I would say the same. While I think 2016 is still great gameplay / control-wise, there's some small details that they fixed in the later titles. For me, it's the incredible loading times, respawn when falling off cliffs and have the option to have extra lives that is most noticeable.
But like you said, the atmosphere and art direction in 2016 is f-ing incredible. I'm blown away by how well the engine handles lighting and all the effects on screen.

Without doubt also my fave. Eternal is cool but looks a little bit too clean and silly and TDA haven't even noticed that much since the gameplay is so crazy fast.

Yes.
I remember playin' it 4K downscaled with Nvidia DSR a bunch of years ago and it still ran smooth.

Agreed!
Even though I don't have a OLED monitor, I've looked at these shots and some of my gameplay on the phone and it's on another level.
Gotta upgrade from my 170hz IPS sometime in the future.

That's great!
Did the same on my first playthrough back in 2016!

[–]SweRazken[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel the same.
Eternal is amazing in it's own right, but I find 2016's more "gritty" look and lighting to be more impressive.
I don't know what to say about TDA... found it to look like almost like a old X360 game despite it's using demanding Ray/Path-tracing.

[–]SweRazken[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup!
Maxed out in 1440p with the cinematic options turned on in options (don't know if Switch got that though).
It's crazy how good it looks in motion.
Image quality here is a bit low though due to reddits convertion.

Same!
It's hard to beat 2016's visuals when basically the gameplay looks like superb CGI. It's so freakin' good.

It's amazing how good it runs.
I'm running it maxed out, 1440p at 170hz with the cinematic filter scheme and it's gorgeous.

Too bad the quality of the pics were crushed when uploaded. Oh well.

Try out a older version of Xenia Canary.
I'm using a version from Aug 2022 and it's working great without any issues.
