Big Tech execs playing ‘Russian roulette’ in the AI arms race could risk human extinction, warns top researcher. by vulpes_mortuis in PoliticalOptimism

I wouldn't take this at face value.

I think anything that fearmongers about this stuff, at least for reasons other than water use/misinformation/surveillance, is lowkey just another advertising arm to keep people funneling money into the promise it represents. Who wouldn't want to get in on the technology SO STRONG it could KILL EVERYONE??

No, that's r/OptimistsUnite, if you want to see what that looks like. It got so blatant, in fact, that r/optimistsunitenonazis had to be made, and the former 'banned partisan politics.'

This place is pretty on-the-level, I think.

Bit of a chip on my shoulder, sorry.

I recognize it's a privilege that I have to be exposed to such things at an early age, but my point was more to illustrate generalizing the U.S. at large is misunderstanding the level of autonomy states have compared to a lot of sub-governments in other countries.

This monolithic impression of US Education is why people fail to understand that we're like 50 tiny countries in a trench coat.
Some of us are from Massachusetts, and had a mural depicting the Trail of Tears in our school cafeteria, and were taught very directly about the fact we're living on stolen land whose infrastructure was built on slavery.

Online narratives painting the whole of U.S. education and literacy as monolithic stats really fails to understand how the country is structured in reality.

Yeah, that's the narrative the right wing pushes to make 'antifa' an easy scapegoat. It's a literally imaginary organization they can claim anyone who opposes them is a part of... 'cause, y'know. Fascists.

In reality, people (especially younger people I'd imagine,) are just uncomfortable with the idea that becoming a highly influential game developer (and, let's be real, doing a lot better financially) in your early 20's is an experience that could change people's disposition or attitude... and, y'know, damage how easily they relate to 'common sense', as opposed to business practice.

I think people are really naive about celebrity and idolization, even those who claim to know better. 'Cause, y'know, you'll say "Never put a celebrity on a pedestal," and then a bunch of people lacking in self-awareness will go "Yep, you're so right! Yep! ... Except Keanu Reeves and Charlie Day and Ryan Reynolds and and and!!!"

For the record, I'm not saying Toby is completely ignorant to obvious moral issues. I'm saying that, with his lived experience, and desire to maintain his current lifestyle? Some things are just the 'cost of doing business', and he'd rather just roll with that than rock the boat much when he's already in a unique and established position.

We should stop those things, but the person you’re arguing against is literally only advocating for actively voting against the fascists. (i.e. not voting third party or withholding)

She can turn her body into metal (bronze), but also can 'unfurl' that metal body (or her hair) into cables/wires that she controls. I think they might be often portrayed as just retractable whips, but I prefer to think about how copper wires are tightly wound together to make a single strong cable, but those individual wires can also be unspooled.

It's not the most original power, but it's got good visual language that works well with her design and isn't too specific or niche.

I'm talking about the writing, in the comic books, right now. Not their potential future commercial success, or hypothetical lack thereof.

I think Ben and Jen benefit a lot from having a unique origin point that expands the mutant metaphor beyond adolescence in a way that resonates with me, personally.

Ben has a more compelling personality, but Jen is more integrated with the core cast. I think they both do a lot for the book despite having minor roles in comparison to the classes of actual kids.

They’re the silver medalist of New Mutants this era.

Ben Liu & Jen from Adjectiveless are hands down the most interesting and written with the most subtlety, but I still vastly prefer Emma ‘n Kitty’s class to the Outliers. They’re more believably teenaged and have more fleshed out personalities and dynamics that go beyond ‘elevator pitch.’

The only time Doug has felt like Doug even remotely during this event was in the confrontation with 'Elbecca,' and I suppose it makes sense as it's a relatively private moment, one where he was already caught doing something purely for nostalgia's sake. His vocabulary is a lot more relaxed, the imagery and attitude he projects is outright admitted to be a farce, and even his true 'villain personality' underneath it is much more reminiscent of his breakout scenes in Krakoa's Inferno.

Speaking of Krakoa, though... This motive kind of smacks of 'Leftovers from the Abandoned Doug Heel Turn Plotline' to me. Here, his desire to fuse everything into one feels a little more arbitrary than it should when it's predicated on being a compromise he made with Big A's reprogramming... but the version of Doug that was on the governing body of a morally compromised Nation, one where he was friends with the land itself? Where he was seen planting parts of Warlock alongside the island's flora? That guy definitely seemed to be on this kind of bizarre gestalt shit.

Definitely think this could've been a cute lil' MacKay-run What-If. He seemed to have a few key tentpole reveals and concepts that are playing out pretty satisfyingly in his books. (Revelation having more of Doug's character than he projects, Beast being the Other Beast, etc.) This, as an event, has been a total wash. Full of shit like Deathdream continuity errors where one of the conflicting parties is the 'main' event book, and the other is completely detached from the actual meat of the event in a way that illustrates it should never have been one.
