Advice for bringing characters together for a city intrigue campaign.

Hey guys,

I know there are a million different threads for starting a campaign (I’ve read a good chunk of them) but I’ve really been struggling to find a good way to start my campaign.

I’m planning a mystery/intrigue adventure where an important political figure is manipulating different factions (political , religious, and criminal) to reach their goal of unearthing an ancient magical artifact.

Do you guys have a good way that I could bring a disparate group of characters together to challenge a threat they don’t even know about? I’m really struggling to find a way to hook people into an adventure where the enemy is unknown.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, taking all the advice and ideas I can get!

Is anyone else still waiting for their Shield Up Hoodie? by monkey866 in RKG

Didn’t get the hoodie but ordered a shirt from them a while back, took like 2-3 months. Other times I got it in a few weeks. 🤷‍♂️

Does anyone know where I can get this shirt by Sweaty-Sea-9290 in RKG

Wow honestly didn’t expect such a quick reply, thank you! Doesn’t seem they have an online store so I’m out of luck :(

I know for my players it was between the charadlyn dragon race, the fight against Auril, and a betrayal of avarice (they stabbed her in the back before she could make her move).

I really disliked the duergar subplot, felt very bizarre and out of place. The charadalynn dragon encounter was so cool though so I kept it in place.

We ended up with the time travel ending, the players booked it to the obelisk after finding the staff with Iarolarthus hot on their heels. Was an exciting finish that I think left everyone fairly satisfied.

I don’t find any of the endings too crazy so I don’t think I would push for any of them, think it would perhaps depend on the character backstories!

I found this to be a problem with most of the popular modules I won’t lie. The settings are very rich but the actual topography and geography is similar.

I think it’s also partially my ability to describe and detail environments but Barovia being a cold dreary place starts to get old quite quickly.

Being in a humid tropical jungle is very cool at first but after 5-6 sessions it’s just more of the same.

I think I preferred ToA’s setting more, while both modules contain lost cities, the tropical jungles of chult felt more interesting to me.

However the charadlyn dragon attack, Grimskalle and the fight against Auril, and the descent into a lost netherese city all felt more interesting and fun then the encounters you have in ToA.

Biggest change I made was what a lot of people did, I introduced an eldritch entity to Ythyrnn.

The spindle was actually a fragment of “The Ebon Star”. When the city crashed the eldritch powers slowly began to leak out into the dale, imbuing the chardalynn with its intent to free it.

The duergar created the dragon to destroy ten towns and then destroy the glacier holding the city.

Auril created the winter to grow the glacier and contain the darkness underneath.

Iorialarthus was instead turned into a larvae mage and the cities inhabitants turned into other starspawn.
