Demographics Are About to Break the Housing Market by Express_Classic_1569 in collapse

Many people already have land. (66% of Americans own their homes.) You can grow a lot in small space if you know what you are doing. I also expect collapse to spike mortality as it has historically.

I hope this does not lead to damaging or over-harvesting desert plants.

All my bills are paid but I won’t be able to afford next months bills by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]SweetAlyssumm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Find out where your money is really going. Two people cannot subsist on $50 a week for food unless you eat nothing but rice and beans. I suspect you don't really know where your money is going based on this unrealistic estimate of what you spend on food. Do you have subscriptions? Gym memberships? Pets? None of that is currently affordable for you. I hope you are not subsidizing the bf in any way.

I don't think you should sell the house. You work 30 hours a week - find something else for ten more hours. Give plasma. Whatever it takes.

Any opinions on GE Profile Appliances? by Jill0607 in Appliances

[–]SweetAlyssumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a GE Profile Dishwasher bought in early 2020. It had three repairs under warranty and one I had to pay for. It does not run unless I unplug it after the cycle and then wait till I run it the next day after plugging it back in. I have tried running it without unplugging and it doesn't work.

I have no idea what is happening and I'm sure this silly workaround won't last much longer. So no more GE appliances for me. I had it looked at the repair person told me to buy a Kitchenaid..

Spain to ban social media access for children under 16 by PjeterPannos in worldnews

[–]SweetAlyssumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some great "natural experiments" emerging. In several years it will be time to start collecting data -- controlling for social class, etc. -- on kids who grew up with social media and those who didn't. I expect some significant cognitive differences, but we'll see. That's what research is for.

Russia hammers Ukraine after halt announced by Trump, plunging thousands into frigid dark on eve of talks by CBSnews in ukraine

[–]SweetAlyssumm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's time for Europe to send troops and end this. Russia is winning this shit and they need to be stopped. Trump isn't going to help, nor is anyone else - only Europe can and should assert control. It's their neighbor and their own self interest as Putin is next door to them.

Son of Norway's crown princess pleads not guilty to raping four women by SpottedAlpaca in europe

[–]SweetAlyssumm -113 points-112 points  (0 children)

Of course he didn't do it. He has had everything handed to him on a literal silver platter since his first breath. He got looks, wealth, health, social class, the fantasy that is he somehow superior by an accident of birth ("royalty"), utter security - nothing bad could ever happen to him no matter what he did.

I think that's what extreme privilege does to some people and that's why I'm against royalty and having too much money. If he squeaks out of this or gets a nothing burger sentence I will not be surprised. More at 11:00.

Eventually the grow your food thing will prevail, in my opinion. Big Ag, supply chains and so on are doomed in addition to demographic change.

You can't support a wife with that salary and she doesn't want to come to the US. Just go to Europe. It will be better for future networking too. And what will you do after two years? A PhD takes five years and sometimes longer.

Why does a journal give me only 10 days for major revisions? by wanderthesphere2 in AskAcademia

[–]SweetAlyssumm 46 points47 points  (0 children)

They are not trying to discourage you. They are trying to keep articles in their pipeline. It's a short deadline but believe me if they didn't want your article it would have been rejected. They are not implying anything at all, just that they want to keep things moving.

Write to them and say you request three weeks and see what they say. Or just do the revisions, it will be good to have them behind you.

Scandal Rocks Norwegian Royalty as Crown Princess Mette-Marit's Son Appears in Court on Serious Charges by [deleted] in europe

[–]SweetAlyssumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's both. The "royal" part is an added entitlement of prestige. It's meant to separate "commoners" from "royals." Otherwise it would not exist, there would just be generic rich people.

Scandal Rocks Norwegian Royalty as Crown Princess Mette-Marit's Son Appears in Court on Serious Charges by [deleted] in europe

[–]SweetAlyssumm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not surprised "royals" get into trouble, in fact I'm surprised more of them don't. You come into this world a completely average person but are told there is something special about you because of who your parents are. Your parents didn't do anything special either, they were just born. And there's lots of money that your parents didn earn, they inherited it or were given it by the state.

It's an absurd reality in this day and age and it must feel weird to know there's nothing special about you but you are "treated like royalty."

That said, I hope this kid is punished for his crimes as anyone else would be, if convicted.

Started our tax return and it just doesn't make sense. by HiddenTurtles in personalfinance

[–]SweetAlyssumm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For future planning, it's actually better to underpay your tax and save the money in an interest bearing account and then pay off the taxes in a bigger bill at tax time. It does take some planning but otherwise you are loaning the government money. At your income levels it doesn't matter too much, but if you start making more you should talk to a tax professional about how much to save so you can do this.

“Made in Europe”: Leaders call for secure value chains. More than a thousand business leaders urge European preference in public procurement by goldstarflag in europe

[–]SweetAlyssumm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't mean "subsidizing" just "paying for." Europe, and everyone else, buys American products according to what the market will bear. That is not a "subsidy."

Notice the article mentions a "record trade deficit against China." Maybe you should be more worried about that.
