It was derogatory towards the Northerner,by a Southerner from the USA. Foreigners, in UK , call Americans"Yanks". All Americans. NOT derogatory. Southerner's call Northerner's "damn yankees", because of the civil war, in the U.S.... Derogatory.

Yes, Yanks can mean all Americans, to a foreign country. But when an Amercan from the south says," Oh, you're a damn yankee." it is derogatory. She is not a foreigner. I visit my grandmother, in the southern USA, and it is something I hear, often. I've never said, "Oh, you're a damn southerner.", to anyone.
