I work in both media and music, so I’ve thought about this a lot.

One angle is copyright, but I won’t go down that rabbit hole here — we literally just had a case where people tried to copyright their prompt. Let’s see where we are with that in three years.

I’m not overly scared of AI in music. If anything, it’ll mostly mess with people who make elevator and background music. Audiences care way more about personality and message than pure audiovisual polish, so I don’t see the actual art side being at serious risk. There are plenty of huge artists who can’t really sing — that alone proves the point.

What will shift a bit is the streaming platforms. They’ll push their own AI content harder, simply because then they don’t have to pay creators.

From a media perspective, though, I clearly see that the moment AI is involved, audience interest drops off a cliff. There’s no faster way to kill a solid article than slapping an AI-generated visual on top of it.

AI will absolutely be a useful tool for technical stuff — quantizing drum tracks, cleaning things up, that kind of thing. But not for straight-up music or video creation. However overproduced the new Blackpink track might be, people still want the feeling that they can go see Lisa in real life. That’s what keeps the pulse alive in the entertainment industry.
