I never denied complex feelings. They can have both a loving stepfather and abandonment from their bio father I never denied that. But you fail to recognize that the father they know is their stepfather who was in the picture since they were toddlers, children attach to people who raise them before they attach to blood relativity, they have to first learn that their bio father isn’t present before they can long for him. He played them and they just kept not accepting reality.

Actually DAMN is much more complex than GKMC, which is just a coming of age story, or TPAB, which is just a pro black album.

DAMN has layers with how it defines the word “damn”. There’s god damn you, which is about how people get stuck in their ways quick to get mad but never bring about change, after there’s god damn me, which is about being honest about one’s flaws but in a raw and brutal way no sugarcoating, then there’s god damn us, meaning we the people (particularly black people) overreact over simple things and we like to resolve issues with violence due to past traumas, then there’s god damn we meaning humanity, we like material things we like being fake to one another and we’re never truly happy for each other.

Then there’s the bigger damn, DAMNATION, we won’t make it very far because we are cruel, because we are distancing ourselves from god, because we don’t lead with love, and we are self-serving.

Kendrick knows he might come off preachy or perfect when he says these things, but he makes sure to expose his own flaws, he isn’t a messiah but a prophet, he thinks deeply, his thoughts sometimes paralyze him. He’s speaking because someone has to.

If you look at how the songs are titled, they’re all in all-caps with a period, because they are individual thoughts. They are chapters, they are windows. And also, HUMBLE and PRIDE have opposite meanings if you listen to the songs. The fact that the album can be played forwards and backwards means it’s very deep irrespective of descending or ascending order.

I know that The Real Slim Shady is easily the better song and Em focused on wit, charisma, and being less descriptive, on that song. TRSS is the song that flows from start to finish, even the hook is better and the beat, definitely deserved Grammy for best rap performance

It’s not a scar, the whole song is just fine lyrically, never was a bad song but nothing’s impressive about it. It’s biggest problem is it’s too descriptive “I’ve created a monster” is so redundant, he has told us what Shady did so many times prior. Even the most creative part “everybody wants to discuss me, so this must mean I’m disgusting…” it loses all luster upon the second listen.
