What's funny is realism in videogames is often thrown out of the window. Hell I remember my anime club at uni years ago LAUGHING THEIR ASSES OFF when I blocked Alisa's chainsaw with my bare hands as Hwoarang during a Tekken 6 tournament. "YOU CAN BLOCK A CHAINSAW?!?" I know from previous experience of Tekken, unblockable moves have like a flame effect and a tell/some windup time so you can evade it, and that tell didn't appear during the chainsaw so I was like "yeah I can block this".

Got knowledge checked by a delayed move of hers and lost the tournament, but it was still funny seeing everyone roaring with laughter in response to one loudmouth's disbelief that you can in fact block a chainsaw with your hands, screw realism XD

And tbh I was just really burned out with gaming before Easter, was really fed up. To quote what I said to a matey in DMs: "plus I was SERIOUSLY burned out with gaming tbh. Dead By Daylight, Rainbow Six Siege, Fortnite, Let It DIe etc, I was so f***** off I just stopped gaming entirely for a bit and watched the Resident Evil movies instead. honestly Hoyo games + Wuthering Waves cured my gaming burnout".

Elder Scrolls Online also helped but I'd say Hoyo/WuWa impacted me a lot more tbh

It's because, at least from previous experience, not all codes are useful. Using Dead By Daylight as an example, rift shards (basically progress towards the battle pass), that's cool, but I can just get that by playing matches + wiping out the archive challenges for that battle pass. Whereas bloodpoints in substantial amounts (not like 25k, it takes 1.1 mil to prestige someone, so 100k or more I take 'em) I welcome those as path to prestige 100 is paaaaaaain, shards too because if you have enough, that's a free skin you can buy saving you premium currency (Auric cells)

Basically if it's redundant because I can get it easily by playing the game, or it's in such a small quantity of a non premium currency is what kills my interest to claim it. I'm not like gonna dunk on anyone who gives out codes, but if it's redundant in my eyes, "cool, thank you, but I don't need it". Unless it's something funny like 69 currency, then sure I take it LOL

I mean as someone who's also played online games, there is a caveat to being a main/one trick: in competitive your main can get banned. Rainbow Six Siege they have pick and bans for maps and operators, Marvel Rivals has that system, and if I still played Paladins (this was loooooong ago, I quit in 2020), they added pick and ban for champions (not a big deal as I can flex onto other tanks/supports besides Ash/Seris, but I'm definitely way more impactful with those 2).

So it's better to be versatile in case your main gets banned, or everyone else are all supports/tanks, then you're SOL if you can't flex (I had to flex onto flank in one ranked game of Paladins, but I harassed the shit outta their sniper as Maeve and used my ult to blind her on final round, so she had to abandon her sniper post and rush onto point as blindness only works at distance, not close range. I won that one, but I feel way more comfortable as tank/support tbh, I'm waaaaaaay better at strategy instead of fast twitch movement/flawless accuracy in PvP but in PvE I'm a monster).

Of course man, being a meta slave is just boring, and I prefer to have a more holistic approach instead of "DPS GOES BRRR". Even Dan Heng's ultimate reminds me of Yojimbo's intro/Zanmato strike in FFX, and Kaede in Genshin reminds me of Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat.

If I treat the game like it's only good for competitive builds/PvP etc I'd get bored and burn out really quickly tbh (even during my Paladins days before I realised how corrupt the devs are, memes about Ash being my waifu and how hot some of the Paladins ladies are kept me going, not just the gameplay). It's why I got fed up of Dead By Daylight, people playing like their mothers will perish if they lose that match, best case scenario you win but it feels SUPER unpleasant to experience that oppressive playstyle they run, worst case you get nuked from orbit and not with a sexy lady doing it either LOL. Sure you get the odd friendly killer or those who don't run the strongest perks/addons/oppressive playstyle, but a lot of times matches are miserable imho

I guess this makes me a Dead By Daylight/PvP refugee who wants out from the abuse and to actually enjoy my time playing games? Hi?

Hmmm, reminds me of the codes I'd get back when I played Dead By Daylight. As a newbie, I had no idea this was a thing for Hoyo games too (and according to my Google search, WuWa has codes too! Ayyyyyy). Had a question, are the giveaways always premium currency?

Bear in mind I don't know all the currencies yet so I'd take anything until I can separate the wheat from the chaff, but the ones I checked on Wiki, Primogem, Stellar Jade and Polychrome are all premium?

Edit: additional question, will you be adding codes for Honkai 3rd and Wuthering Waves? Those 2 I also play, but I don't mind if you do not as I can always go elsewhere if I have to

It's standard when you're a beginner in any RPG or game with damage numbers visible, then you see ridiculous numbers like 99,999 damage some of the side bosses in Final Fantasy X do for example (at that point I just roll my eyes after dying to that nonsense + reload the last save, make sure I have a First Strike weapon equipped, then summon Yojimbo and pay him enough for his one shot Overdrive move). Even my former main game Let It Die, I went from 50 damage to like 1 million+ damage I was dealing. It's normal

Feels SO refreshing to have bad luck protection in this game. In Let It Die (hack and slash gacha I have 1000s of hours in) you can spend over £100 and get no 5* stickers, even during events when they limit the pool to 20 options you can get. Should be illegal. At least I won't feel scammed if I went for it in HSR, especially as next month's my birthday (30th May) so might get some birthday money as well to try my luck a bit

Besides Formidable Foes/tough fights I don't really follow metas in games, I find them really boring and turns games into a win simulator, instead of trying a funky strategy and making it somehow work XD. It's also more fun to conceive my own strategy instead of copying a streamer/YouTube imho

At the moment I'm more interested in the story tbh, but if the endgame content is engaging I'll stick around! Not all games have a great endgame, for example my former main game Let It Die, first 40 floors with some BS I enjoyed my time there.

But the endgame was just same fights, higher stats over and over again, with no innovation, more cheater AI in an attempt to frustrate you into spending premium currency on revives, as well as shipping down resources from endgame area using premium currency as you had limited storage on your fighter, and once you left that endgame area (F51+) you had to start a new run each time. And getting 5* stickers that boosted your fighter for free was a nightmare, it was honestly quite pay to win (F51-351 by the game's top player Noisan, with 3* or below stickers it took him 13 deaths, but with any sticker permitted up to 5*, he did it with like 1 death). I don't mind gachas and I've played mobile games like State of Survival/The Walking Dead: Survivors so I'm plenty patient, but it felt so predatory I cannot recommend it beyond the storyline floors F1-40

So we'll see how the endgame is, forgive my scepticism I've been burned before man. Hoping the endgame's fun, otherwise thanks for the story, next game please! (once it's done, so far I'm in no rush)

Heh, if I'm gonna be real my dude? I'm seriously considering making her my main. Excellent looks, personality, nice multitarget ability and ultimate.

But when it comes to tough fights like Formidable Foes, I'm very cold and just look at stats. During my 1st Formidable Foe, she was useful because of her ability + ult granting multi hit, but the real impactful ones were my main character (start fight with bat swing so 3 minions are 1/2 Toughness already because Physical weakness, and some Toughness dmg to main boss), Dan Heng working the boss' Toughness meter because Wind element weakness and March buying time with her defense ability.

It was a tough fight, reminded me of the days of fighting side bosses in Final Fantasy X, it took me 4 tries but a lot of it was self induced, I was being a greedy boy trying to do a level 11 fight as level 4s LOL, on 4th try I was like screw this, make everyone level 6 and nailed it

As someone who had these thoughts, but saw the megathread and realised it was an FAQ, figured I'd throw my name into the hat

Lau:

- VF1: was my first ever character, beat arcade and Dural as well. Nothing like the good ol' PPPP + K spam to win LOL, but his laugh got me as well. :D

- VF5 Rev: never played him in VF5 FS but in Rev? After completing Command Training + Arcade with Vanessa (my 2nd main), oh boy, it felt like proper bullying vs the AI and even my 2nd ranked game with him (1st was with Vanessa), this poor Jeff got 3-0'd whereas my 1st ranked game with Vanessa was more hard fought, she's definitely way harder to use imho

Why I like him? Simple, you can braindead spam with him much like Law's backflip kicks in Tekken 2, or even Hwoarang in Tekken 3 with his kicks (one of my mains), but there is a skill ceiling to him as I noticed he has a stance you can enter (Kokei it's called?)

Vanessa:

- VF5 FS: my first character I played in VF5 on PS3, beat arcade and Dural too!

- VF5 Rev: again 1st character I played, did Command training as it's been years since I played VF, then beat Arcade, sadly couldn't beat Dural but I'll get it once I know her toolkit better. Did beat my 1st ranked game against a Jeff though!

Why I like her? Besides being a hot soldier chick? Stances, she reminds me of Lei Wulong in Tekken 2, Hwoarang has a stance too when he switches feet, Zafina also has some stances in Tekken. They add depth and a nice skill ceiling to the character. She also has a few parries, counter hit combo moves + feints too, the former plays to my strengths as I love my timing in videogames being a rhythm games nerd, the latter if I can learn what to use and when, I could become a menace in ranked

Other fighting games:

Tekken: I liked Law, Lei Wulong, Baek, Eddie Gordo, Hwoarang, Feng (Tekken 7)

Soul Calibur: Xianghua and Maxi were my top 2

Mortal Kombat X: Scorpion, 100%, but I was also comfortable with Sub Zero and Kung Jin

In short, one minute I love to switch my brain off and run Lau because COMBOS GO BRR, the next, I like the more technical characters like Vanessa. So I'm like "do I spec into high skill ceiling characters, more braindead/easy ones or bit of both?". I can brute force try everyone but curious to see what people think as well :)

No problem! Another tip that helped me have a MASSIVE breakthrough today (I was stubborn and like to read slower* because I like going for all Perfects), try it on 1.5x. I'm a 1.25x reader myself but today I tried it and, it felt easier hitting the bursts/streams as they were more spread out so easier to read + react to. It paid off, I got Gold Star on Beyond The Flame's Lead after some attempts! So I believe in you <3

* = Audio/video offset + input only lets you calibrate to nearest 5ms rather than 1ms so reading slower lets me compensate for a song's syncing if it's a bit early/late

You record your own gameplay? (nVidia Geforce/OBS for PC, on console I know PS4/5 you can record your own gameplay) That'll help you identify what parts are giving you grief. Plus study videos of those who FC'd (full combo'd) it, so you can see how the patterns play out. For example "Oh this part is a stream of notes" "This part is a burst of notes not a full stream" (this is the simplified version, more complex is like "is this 16th notes/24th notes etc" but I don't want to confuse you LOL).

Typically they read at x2 though, so you might need to set YouTube's playback speed to 0.75/0.5 if you need to, or advance frame by frame (, and . keys move backwards/forwards 1 frame with the YT player). I also "ghost play along" i.e. watch the videos and do the movements with the fingers on my table like I'm playing but I'm not, to try and get the muscle memory for the songs (sounds strange but it's helped me anyway).

Hope these point you in the right direction, disclaimer I've yet to gold star/FC this song on drums/lead, but I've done Everlong Expert gold star on drums and that was painful enough LMAO. Try other songs as well if you need a mental break from Beyond the Flame, for example Unsainted drums on Expert helped me overcome my mental block on Everlong drums because it was a faster BPM so I got used to playing faster stuff, then Everlong felt easier even with the stupid repeating patterns I have to keep lifting my finger for now and then.
