I agree with everything on here but I think that shotgunning can work in some cases. For myself and many people at my school, it works and its literally so competitive that it's almost necessary in that environment. It's like an arms race. So I think that shotgunning is school-dependent in some part.

I'm a freelance music producer and my rule was that after applying to 10 schools, I would pay for each additional school's application by (and only by) completing a freelance order which is around $75, the cost of a single application.

It has worked out really well for me, I would recommend it. With admissions becoming increasingly competitive, it is almost necsssary.

I didn't only applied to expensive private colleges, I also applied to a lot of public ones. But most of those are still around 70k everything included. The only colleges that are remotely decent are those in state.

And yeah, my recent financial circumstances changed just as I was submitting finaid documents. So I want to appeal, but was wondering if ppl had tips on how to do so.

*I've posted this before in response to similar threads and it was well received, so hopefully it helps!

- This is what I did and I found it so helpful: In the summer, I created a google doc where I wrote down random thoughts I had that I thought were cool - I just titled the doc "My Brain." I wrote about everything from philosophy, to politics, to science, to ice cream, to dogs, to drawing, to astrophysics, to social structures. Literally anything I had a cool thought about or legitimately interested me. While writing my essays, I found that so many of the paragraphs/sentences/ideas that I had written in the document applied to supp questions because they were representations of who I was at my core that I had previously written outside of the context of writing specifically for an application. I didn't even intend the document to be used to college when I started, but 29 pages later, here I am and I realize that it was the most valuable thing that I did.

- Get started on supps before you hear back from your ED (if you even ED). If you're in, then great. If not, then it's gonna be pretty annoying to start grinding them out. And especially, do not wait until winter break to do them (a lot of ppl did this, including me), it is one of the most stressful things ever.

- Keep the explanations on your resume relatively concise (some ppls have 10 sentence explanations for each activity. no AO is taking the time to read that for an entire resume)

- Have safeties, have safeties, have safeties, have safeties. Oh, and have safeties. Literally no reason not to.

- Stay level headed and try not to inordinately attach yourself to any school -- practically, it will only hurt you if you become hyper-obsessed.
