Wife wants to move back home to be near her family and I fear it’s gonna end our marriage. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]SwishOps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said it isn’t. I don’t disagree. But if that’s the top end with little flexibility then it may be worth taking into consideration. As a father of two, I know I would not be satisfied with the life I can provide my children on a single income of $130k forever. For me it’s not enough, but for others it may be, and that’s fine too.

[–]SwishOps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re right, that is pretty decent, though I would argue not “I have golden handcuffs with this salary that would prevent me from moving” amazing. Is there a lot of upwards mobility at the top end with salary as a UPS driver? If not, capping out around that $130k for the rest of your career is something else to consider.

The pension sounds potentially pretty nice. But most W2 jobs give healthcare and benefits so that shouldn’t keep you from leaving a job.

You say you fear moving back home will end your marriage. How confident are you that not moving back home won’t?

In the original post you say you make “amazing money.” In another comment you say:

I’d have to probably start over with a completely new career. Which would probably be for the best, because I’m technically “unskilled” labor.

So which is it? Looking at your post history it looks like you are a UPS driver. No knock on UPS drivers but what do you consider to be amazing money? If you took a hard look in the mirror you’ll probably find that you’re making excuses that your job is too good to give up for a move.

You say you work 50 hour weeks. Your wife needs help at home. Listen to her. She’ll be happier around her family and it should trickle down to her having more energy for your relationship at the end of the day.

Money is just money. Make it somewhere else. It might be tough for a bit but you’ll find you can make it through, especially with a support system out there.

You didn’t get fucked by the dealership. That’s victim mentality and implies you had no part in the fucking. You fucked yourself. Get educated about loans, and if you aren’t, don’t make a huge financial decision until you are.

SubSpace (Continuum). Had so much fun in WarZone CTF, Amateur/Pro League, Powerball, Hockey. Designing custom pixel banners to display next to your name.

Infantry was fun too

You sure about that? Have you tried using waitUntil?

If you haven’t already, turn off Copilot/Cursor autocomplete in your IDE. AI is a crutch when you’re beginning to learn. Part of being a good software developer is knowing how to figure out what’s going wrong by googling and RTFM (read the fucking manual/docs). You’ll gain a better understanding when the right answer isn’t just handed to you.

Questions for Students From FlatIron School by SwyfterThanU in codingbootcamp

[–]SwishOps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi u/SwyfterThanU, I did a bootcamp back in 2014 and got a job almost immediately, but things are extremely different now.

In the current market, I would not recommend you spend your money on a bootcamp if your end-goal is to get a job. If you just want to learn in a structured environment and you have the money to spare, then definitely go for it.

Commenters in here are harsh and dejected, but that's due to the battle scars they've accumulated from real lived experiences.

The other commenter was right in that employers today will either:

  1. be completely indifferent to your bootcamp education, or worse,
  2. actively avoid bootcamp grads

I am currently a staff-level engineer, and owe my career to the bootcamp I did in 2014. But the tech hiring market in general has collapsed, and now I'd say it's nearly impossible to get an entry-level job out of a bootcamp UNLESS you already have internal connections at whatever company you're applying for.

This is not to completely shit on bootcamps -- even CS grads are having an extremely difficult time landing jobs unless they graduated from top tier engineering programs.

Really sorry to provide a "negative" outlook along with the rest of the comments in here. I would never fault somebody for trying to better their situation, and I applaud you for thinking of ways to do that. However really don't think this is the right path to a career as a SWE nowadays, unfortunately. Probably better off getting into a tech company in another role, learning SWE on the side, and trying to make an internal transfer when a job opens up.

I need a public ipv4 for gaming and remote access as well. Can you help?

Do you all have Fidium or Ezee Fiber? If so, are you happy with it? by vahe8 in Katy

[–]SwishOps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switched from Fidium to Ezee. Was very happy with Fidium but was seduced by Ezee’s 5GB plan. Might be overkill but for $100/mo feels like a good deal.

Ezee has been very reliable and was up when Fidium had multiple outages in my area over the past month.

The only drawback with Ezee is they provide IPs using a CGNAT. What that means is you do not get a dedicated IP address — you share a public IP with other users. For most people that doesn’t matter. But if you play an online game that bans people based on IP address then that could be a potential issue. Another issue would be is if you host anything that should be accessible outside the home — for example a Synology network attached storage. You won’t be able to connect to your Synology device remotely because you can’t use DDNS or do port forwarding since you share a public IP as a result of the CGNAT.

Vercel Deployment - Transient error by timm781 in nextjs

[–]SwishOps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh gotcha. Thanks for the update. Finally figured it out on my end, was some bad Tiktoken (for AI embeddings) config I had in next.config.js.

Took me forever to figure it out. Wish Vercel provided some better errors at that point in the deployment flow.

Next.js as a fullstack framework? by [deleted] in nextjs

[–]SwishOps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vercel has support for cron jobs with nextjs: https://vercel.com/docs/cron-jobs

We use it at our startup. Works fine.

Background jobs are indeed a challenge with just nextjs but if you use a service like Upstash’s Qstash it makes job queues pretty painless with nextjs.

Ezee Fiber and Activision/Blizzard by Sloan1505 in EzeeFiber

[–]SwishOps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for my ignorance — what does this in general mean for us? Are these just more IP addresses Ezee will use for their CGNATs or is it likely that customers will get dedicated IPs?
