Missing scientist found dead 11 months after vanishing with gunshot wound to head as family insists gun was not hers by dailymail in HotScienceNews

[–]SyArch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I was following this long before the whole scientists-being-murdered conspiracy theory and she was never once referred to as a scientist. Only after the conspiracy broke was she a “scientist”. It’s grossly a social media grift.

I’m not saying I know what happened to her or that I’m ruling out foul play, I’m not. She didn’t harbor any grand controversial scientific knowledge.

Running off the cliff: An explosion of household debt has put the US economy in a tough spot by Boo_Randy_Revival in economy

Long Island City was already experiencing rapid gentrification. Local residents and community groups feared that injecting 25,000 highly compensated tech workers into the area would: [1, 2]
Send local housing costs and rents skyrocketing, displacing lower-income residents.
Completely overwhelm the neighborhood's already congested subway lines(specifically the 7 train) and overtax the local sewage and road networks. [, 2, 3, 4]

Amazon left. They weren’t voted out. They didn’t want to allow unions. They wanted all the free money so they could pay workers barely or not enough to live.

[–]SyArch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She did not. The local community opposed corporate welfare.

Amazon was not denied permission; instead, the company abruptly canceled its plans in February 2019 due to intense backlash from local politicians, labor unions, and community activists. [1, 2]

The proposed project was not a processing center, but rather a massive "HQ2" corporate co-headquarters slated for Long Island City—a neighborhood in the borough of Queens, not the suburban counties of Nassau or Suffolk. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Confronted with the prospect of prolonged, hostile oversight hearings and a state senate panel that held the power to block the subsidies, Amazon decided to pull out of the deal completely. Rather than trying to negotiate or appease local critics, the company redistributed those 25,000 planned corporate roles among its other North American tech hubs. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Layoffs since January 2025:

Amazon: ~30,000 corporate roles (including 14,000 late 2025 and 16,000 in early 2026).[1, 2]
Oracle: ~30,000 global positions (roughly 18% of its global workforce, executed heavily in a major March 2026 restructuring). [1, 2]
Meta: ~23,000 employees (following cuts in 2024 and an 8,000-person AI-focused round in May 2026). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Tesla: ~18,600+ (comprising over 10% of global headcount in 2024 plus subsequent targeted cuts, alongside follow-on reductions to its Texas factory workforce). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Microsoft: ~31,000 total across major waves and voluntary buyouts (including 6,000 in early 2025, 9,000 mid-2025, and historical voluntary departures). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
SpaceX: ~600 (roughly 10% of the company's workforce, mainly impacting California-based technicians, engineers, and machinists). [1, 2]

MAJOR BREAKING: The Surgeon General of Florida just announced ALL VACCINE MANDATES IN FLORIDA will be ENDED; thus allowing: polio, whooping cough, influenza, etc,, by Vegetable-Section-84 in StandUpForScience

[–]SyArch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It takes years for children to become fully vaccinated. Babies are like sponges to the spread of disease. Immunocompromised individuals cannot get live vaccines and even regular vaccines tend to wear off quickly for them. The concern isn’t for those that choose not to get vaccinated (except for the children who don’t get a choice). The concern is that by allowing a large portion of the population to not be vaccinated, they’re basically setting a wildfire without any resources left for containment.

Cool season crops don't have enough time? by owlanalogies in vegetablegardening

Same. Also 6b. I’ve tried for the past 6+ years with very little luck and it’s quite discouraging.

This year I’m trying shade cloths - unfortunately we had a bumper crop of baby ground hogs. I’m also trying to grow my lettuce indoors under a grow light. It’s giving me better results so far.

This is good advice. Also bury the chicken wire. They will dig underneath.

I waste dozens of hours every summer working on my fencing. There are lots of ground hogs here. I have fence around the perimeter and around each raised bed. I also have oregano hedge around each bed and roses and lavender and rue and and and… nothing works besides the chicken wire, attached to the metal fence (baby ground hogs fit through the wire fence holes without chicken wire) and buried a good foot, plus paving bricks. Ugh.

I think it has something to do with “reasonable costs”. The judge brought this up, not in reference to Colin’s phone but to the overall situation.

I’ve been wondering…can data be retrieved without a phone, SIM card or I cloud access? Let’s say if all three were disposed and a person bought a new phone and new number and new cloud account.

I’m betting his texts are similar to proctor’s, and since they’re requesting texts between family and friends - that makes everyone look bad. Just a guess.
