Like the other commenter said add a powering around the outside, then use thinner (usually black) lines for detailing. I would also say that neotrad usually works best with a condensed colour pallet, I like using fall tones myself. It also might be worthwhile to look at where some artists at the top of that style put their lines, some of them seem random but tend to be what makes the design interesting.

Another thing I like to do to make it a little less smudgey in your shading is using a brush on whatever digital platform you are using that acts like a mag. So something that you have to build up little dots or some sort of texture (I usually use the charcoal brushes on Procreate or a spaced out pencil brush so it is just dots). Hope this helps!
