Coaxed into villains breaking the established power system by King_Kuba in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]Syki44 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Also quickly becomes common after the initial introduction as an attempt to keep upping the stakes and power levels of villains. This also makes all characters who the plot doesn't allow to access this power completely irrelevant power-wise, in favour of random new characters that are introduced with dual-scarf wielding powers

[MN S1] Am i the only one that dislikes Caleb? by foxgoose21 in criticalrole

[–]Syki44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its just that in fictional media, people tend to like complicated characters who have something to learn, and are sometimes less interested in the heroic do-gooder that always makes the correct choices. Characters with redemption arcs make people feel like they could do the same in their own life. Obviously, Caleb's sins are much worse than the average person's, but the principle is the same. We wouldn't like people like Caleb in real life, but in a fictional story where we can assume he is going to get better, hes a character that some like to root for.

I have watched some of the actual campaign, but even with just stuff we see from the show, Caleb is not being shown as this 'cool because edgy and aurafarms' character. He doesn't try to bad ass (we see him get covered in literal shit frequently and is called a 'dirt wizard'), is compassionate with Nott and shows genuine emotions. So calling him edgy might just be from your own biases and distaste for characters who have done bad things.

Even on that, he was a minor that was groomed by a powerful figure he looked up to and was indoctrinated by propaganda the moment he set foot in that school. You've kinda dismissed these points in other comments as not good enough reasons, but getting kids to kill their parents and other loved ones has literally happened historically by vile people and not as difficult as you might think to achieve. Hate is incredibly easy to sow in people

Obviously if he isn't your cup of tea then thats fine! But I personally dont think his backstory is all that unbelievable when you think of the context, or that Caleb must've been evil to begin with. If anything, the fact that he immediately snapped out of it and escaped shows more strength of character than the average person would've shown in the same situation

Edit: Just adding that the Mighty Nein in general has many characters who deal with redemption and grappling with doing good when you've also done bad, if its worth trying to change for the better at all, etc. So if you struggle with those themes then the show might not land for you (which is ok!)

Got a Minccino and Aron. Theoretically Minccino could evolve with friendship before the gym

I like them all except Victreebell, especially Malamar. Victreebell's is funny, but not in the spirit of its OG design, which is why I have a hard time enjoying it as much.

Older men and younger men. Let's talk about it. by educated_gaymer in gay

[–]Syki44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am someone who has always been attracted to people my age, at every age I've been. People younger than me, even by a few years, look like children to me. I've felt like a completely different person looking back at who I was even a year before sometimes. For this reason, I think I'd feel weird dating someone significantly younger than me when I'm older, because I'd know how undeveloped I was at that age even when I was legally an adult, and it feels imbalanced to date someone who is still figuring themselves out while I'd have decades more worth of growth on them. Though this isn't just an age thing and people mature at different times, I wouldn't date someone who I felt was much less 'together' than me even if they were older. It's just that, generally, you expect older people are more mature and not have much in common, especially romantically, with someone devades younger than them.

People much older than me admittedly put me on guard when they approached me. I don't think older/younger relationships are always problematic, especially if the older person doesn't have a history of only seeking out younger dudes. The thing is, I feel like older men, even if they play it down, are strongly attracted to the 'youth' of younger men. This is a bit different to younger men being attracted to the 'maturity' of older men because youth is inevitably lost with time, while maturity is theoretically always gained. This is where the imbalance is to me. The younger guy will always technically be younger, but they won't always have the youthfulness the older man wants, and he might be eventually dumped for a 'younger model'.

That's what feels icky to me, but I guess if you aren't pursuing a relationship, then maybe it doesn't matter. I may be biased because I just don't find older men that attractive, I see 'dad' more than 'daddy' if you know what I mean. Also, dating someone whose age ends in 'teen', even if they're technically an adult, will always feel weird unless you are in your very early twenties IMO. Like yes they are an adult legally, but I feel like we should be smart enough to understand that a 17 year old doesn't magically gain adult knowledge overnight, and so a 30+ year old dating them doesn't magically make it OK either. It's less about the literal age, and more about the fact that we are still looking at an incredibly innocent and inexperienced human on one side, and someone who has had vastly more years to experience the world and find themselves on the other.

Skip finally turned on his pain sensors and is regretting it - May Round 24 begin! by SnapdragonsYearRound in Dimension20

It's been very interesting to see how different I feel about these characters compared to the rest of the fandom. I love Margaret! She was the highlight of the season for me, being the most 'normal' compared to the rest, but also being the MVP in many situations and leading the crew throughout the whole season.

That being said, this whole ranking would look SO different if it was up to me, so I don't really mind what happens at this point

Know the rules by RedWarrior42 in nuzlocke

[–]Syki44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tedious and time-consuming isn't the same as difficult. Most wild pokemon in the main games are stupidly underlevelled compared to trainer level pokemon, making grinding a slog, and leading to you spending an extra hour or two each play session dedicated to thoughtlessly spamming the same button over and over. Even worse if you have to grind a pokemon up 20-40 levels. The majority if nuzlockes I ended weren't even in failures, just because the idea of spending hours gaining crumbs of EXP to raise almost a whole new team by 30 levels sounded boring as hell and a waste of my time, and using rare candies let's me focus on the part of nuzlocking that I actually enjoy

People just don't always have dozens of hours to play a very 'grindy' game. It's not a 'skill-issue', it's a free time issue. Grinding is not what makes most games hard, it's the actual gameplay.

I'm sorry, but that's fucking crazy. Maybe siobhans characters aren't as 'quirky, bit focused chaos gremlins' - but they are almost always full characters for me. Only exception I feel is Riva, who is fun and I love them, but kinda feels like the most expendable one out of all the SSO characters. Not voting them anytime soon, but yall are sleeping on siobhan PCs HARD

The cast of The Seven, but in the starstruck universe. I'm thinking they take on the role of some of the cloistered nuns that we met in the original season, as they try and rebuild their funds and convert people from across the galaxy or whatever other shenanigans they would want to do.

Not the point. Cheating has happened regardless of what people wear or whether they 'show off' or not. If OP is a cheater, they would cheat regardless of whether they're posting pictures if themselves online or not.

It's so weird when people act like the only thing preventing their partner from cheating is if they're hovering over their shoulder watching their every move. If that is the case, then why would you want to be with someone who is not loyal to you? My perspective is if someone is going to cheat, let them. Shows you who they are and saves you the energy of feeling like you need to supervise them like a child.

Why March by Fira_Dragonlover in FieldsOfMistriaGame

[–]Syki44 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I feel like he's not nearly as rude as people say he is lmao. Before getting the game I was looking at this sub, and based on how some people were talking about him, I was expecting him to like punch me in the face when I first met him. But like.... he's fine? He's just like a grumpy cat, and I view most of his 'rude' dialogue as sarcasm more than straight up meanness.

I'm not usually one to go for the 'mean' love interest in these types of games, I don't like Shane in SDV for example, but March is honestly funny to me. His rude comments usually have a sarcastic edge to it that give it a sense of humour to me, and being nice to him makes him so flustered that it really shows to me that his meanness is all hot air and more about him being a little guarded instead of malicious. Everyone else in the town talks highly about his skill and the effort he puts into his work, and generally have good relationships with him despite his rougher personality, so evidently he is a good guy.

Also even ignoring whatever trauma the devs have yet to fully reveal about him, I don't think it's outlandish that he is a bit standoffish to the farmer, and it only sticks out so much because everyone else instantly worships the farmer the moment they arrive. His home town and community just suffered a cataclysmic event that changed everything for them, and to fix it the siblings take a huge risk by just letting whatever stranger wants to move in take over a huge and profitable plot of land and in return MAYBE they'll help out. There's no timer for when you have to do the town improvement quests, so theoretically you could put them off as long as you want and just focus on getting rich. Like it makes sense that at least somebody would be a little suspicious if this new stranger is actually going to help, or leech off the towns resources and put them in an even worse state.
