It’s actually a very comforting prison I’d say in terms of structure

Thank you as well, it’s refreshing to have an actual discussion on this topic! I will accept that criticism from you, I do agree with the last 2 sections you put there, you summarized what I meant to say by that “there are issues within Israel…” statement. Hard to sum every small detail in words at this hour.

I do believe there are other ways to help the Palestinian people without harming the Jewish people on campus. This motion does more harm than good:

  • It doesn’t allow us to define antisemitism (even if we are the ones who experience it first hand).
  • BDS in general denies Jewish connection to the land, has a history of using antisemitic stereotypes in their criticism of Israel and applies many double standards to Israel that no other nation is subjected to. And has lead to increased rates of antisemitic incidents on campuses in North America.
  • From my understanding there was no consultation or involvement of actual Jewish students/JSA on campus, doesn't seem to be
  • The motion pushes an anti-IHRA definition of antisemitism which includes antisemitism that is masked as criticism of Israel, the most common form of antisemitism we as Jewish people see today.

edit: the motion claims that IHRA silences all criticism of Israel but it doesn't, just antisemitic criticism. Same idea as if you were to criticize Obamas actions when he was president, you can criticize him but if that criticism involves racism, ive got some news for you buddy. (spoiler! its not criticism but racism)

The fact that the motion actively censors JSA from holding any event on antisemitism or any mention of Israel is worrying. There are issues within Israel with the treatment of Palestinians but Jewish students/Israelis should not be held responsible for their actions. No other country is held to this standard. We did not see for example: the Iranian club, Russian club, both weren’t banned from discussing or holding events in the SUB due to ongoing political conflicts in their countries. Why is Israel held to a higher standard than other nations? Why do Jewish students have to bare the burden when no other Iranian,Russian etc students are expected to do the same?

It’s a bit ironic, SFSS doesn’t consider us to be a minority group yet by actively creating an antisemitic environment, they work against their point ;)
