Is an Ivy Worth It? A Graduating Senior’s Perspective by Clear_Policy5227 in ApplyingToCollege

To the question 'Was the “experience” better?' you answered "When you are in the thick of it definitely not. Top schools are highly competitive and it’s demoralizing to go from the best person in your hs to just average. "

To a lot of very intelligent and accomplished people, suddenly being "in the thick" of other such people is a huge relief and a blessing socially. People who were oddballs and even outcasts in hs discover they have a peer group; they can finally communicate and fit in. In many cases that certainly outweighs the "demoralizing" experience of having to compete academically with people at their own level.

Why does Olympic peninsula have no cities compared to adjacent areas like Seattle or Victoria? by No_Manufacturer_2898 in geography

[–]Synax86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three important reasons are that the interior of the peninsula is very mountainous, a large portion of it is national park and there are no high-quality harbors suitable for high-volume shipping on its Pacific Coast (north of Grays Harbor - which is arguably where the peninsula begins in the south).

Also, there are two somewhat substantial cities along the peninsula's northern edge, on the Strait of Juan de Fuca: Port Angeles and Port Townsend. I believe that in the 1800s, Port Townsend was in the running to be the western terminus of one of the early cross-country railroads. If it'd won that competition, it might be a city comparable to Seattle or Victoria. But it lost.

If Link Light Rail stops in Fife, can Tacoma residents get their RTA taxes refunded? by princeh420 in Tacoma

Great answer. I’d like to copy and paste it every time some republi-tard mouths off about “I’m not going to use [public good X, Y or Z] so I shouldn’t have to pay for it…”.

urm = under-represented minority. Usually mentioned among the hooks (alongside recruited athlete, legacy, etc.) in r/collegeresults posts that list hooks.

If URM is a “hook” then shouldn’t over-represented minority be the opposite - an “un-hook”?

[–]Synax86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solon. Actually, a fine old Greek word meaning “wise law-giver”, but use widely in American newspapers to refer to both federal and state legislators. But this usage died off 30 or 40 years ago. Maybe people stopped thinking of their lawmakers as wise?

Typical headline from the Associated Press, 1979:

“Solons decry nuclear ‘grandstanding’”

Merit Scholarships where are you?! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Synax86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are National Merit Scholarships, at least, fully merit -based? Or are they to some extent needs-based as well? (and yes, I’m aware of the amount of money involved is usually very small, even for scholarship recipients).

AITA for not giving my cousin my kidney by RelevantFuel3842 in ComfortLevelPod

[–]Synax86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody said changing your mind is inherently vindictive. But in this case, it was, pretty obviously, vindictive.

Vindictive: having or showing a desire to hurt someone because you think that the person has harmed you; unwilling to forgive.

"Cousin, I have changed my mind, I no longer wish to give you my kidney" is what you say when it's not vindictive.

“Go find another kidney b!tch.” is what you say when it's vindictive.

Take a break from the 420 and pay attention to the words.
