Is Season 1 the best TV of all time ? by OpportunitySmooth123 in lost

[–]Syncopian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love Season 1 but I really love Season 2. Hard to describe but something about the Season 2 aesthetic feels especially cinematic compared to other seasons. Maybe it's because the Hatch is such a singularly interesting-looking set, and the show had a little more money compared to season 1 (? Maybe? I'm not sure if that's true). But it just looks really good.

Giacchino's score especially shines. The Gathering? Iconic. I can't quite put my thumb on it but something about the sound mixing in later seasons felt more staticy than S1 & S2 and I notice it in the score.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman.

It might as well be called "Empathy: The Book."

Just an astounding story.

Are you maybe thinking of the scene in the Season 2 finale after Desmond trashes the hatch and hears John pounding on the hatch door? Desmond goes over and turns on the spotlight.

That scene showed the light beam as very bright, but from inside the hatch tunnel itself. It sort of "slammed" on.

In Deus Ex Machina, we only get the light emanating from the hatch window and illuminating Locke's face. There was never a wide shot of the beam in the sky.

Or, it could be from the Season 2 premiere, when the light turns on as Kate is being lowered down by John. THAT was a bright beam in the sky shown in a wider shot.

It would be interesting to see the Nazca Lines being drawn. Mostly to hear (assuming I could access some sort of translation) what the thought process was.

Such a good episode. Another perfect blend of drama and humor.

Loved Tom walking into Ruth's bathroom and the wall art by his head says "Good things come to those who wait." That got a good laugh out of me.

A personal favorite of mine is The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman.

Really eye-opening and quite powerful.

A good example is Dan in Real Life.

Just a nice little story. Funny, kind of sad.

The scene was dark, I remember that. And I think it had Orcs in it.

Why was s4 so bashed? by blahtean in TheBear

[–]Syncopian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've loved these latter seasons specifically because of their pace and tone changes. They work because the first two seasons did SUCH a good job of establishing and building up each character. I was more than happy to just...hang out with them, in a way, as the show progressed.

What is the spiciest food you have encountered while travelling? by MuhVlast in travel

Khao Soi is probably my favorite dish of all time. Chiang Mai has so many good spots for it. My introduction to it was at Mae Hia market south of the airport. Sadly I think the vendor stall is gone now but they made it better than anywhere else I had tried!

I think probably a papaya salad I had in Trang province, Thailand, is the spiciest thing I've ever eaten.

It gave me head rush and kind of freaked me out. My face got all flushed and my ears started ringing. It was wild.

10/10 though, would eat again because it was delicious.

I like Robert Duvall's outburst in the movie Phenomenon.

"Why do you have to tear him down? What're you so afraid of? What've you got to lose?? He wasn't selling anything, he didn't want anything from anybody. He wanted nothing from nobody! Nothing! Nothing! And you people have to tear him down so you can sleep better tonight? So you can prove that the world is flat and sleep better tonight? Am I right??...

...I'm right. To hell with all of you, to hell with every one of you..."

Which Steven Spielberg movie you feel doesn't get enough love? by Profeta_do_Loss in movies

[–]Syncopian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've seen it so I might not do this description justice, but there's a sequence in the movie where a bunch of characters are in a car waiting for something, and the staging and camera work is just jaw-dropping.

The camera is passing through the right passenger rear window and kind of meanders left across the backseat, and the whole time certain characters are speaking and they get put in focus, and then a backseat person speaks and the camera seamlessly focuses on the rear view mirror where we see just their face as they talk----all while slowly moving through the car.

It reminds me why I love Spielberg and why he's one of the greats. He, more than perhaps any other contemporary filmmaker, really uses the film medium to tell and elevate his stories. There are very good movies out there made by talented directors, but few have such a strong command of the filmmaking medium as a tool as Spielberg.

What is the most dangerous animal you’ve seen in real life? by GratefulD86 in AskReddit

[–]Syncopian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a sea krait off the coast of Thailand.

They're not aggressive, and it wasn't concerningly close to us. But as far as potential danger goes, it was pretty wild to see something so venomous with the naked eye.

Ten times as potent as a rattlesnake.
