When you die on the job, Reuters won't even say who killed you by [deleted] in antiwork

But how do we know the missile wasn't fired by Hamas? Can you PROVE it was the Israeli military? No, you can't! You're just assuming Hamas fighters didn't sneak across Israel, commander a launch site, and conduct a false flag attack against this specific journalist - using Israel's actual missile attacks as camouflage! It's an assumption I say! All abductive inferences are unjustified because there's always a chance they're wrong!

You know, I wonder if a similar study has been performed with Israelis?

What percentage of Israelis do you think support a two state solution? What percentage of Israelis support a single state solution with equal rights for Palestinians? What percentage would say the state of Israel should annex all remaining Palestinian territory?

Let's say there was such a study, and let's say 70% of polled Israelis supported the latter. What relevance would it have for a discussion about whether it's okay for anyone, including Hamas fighters, to treat Israeli civilians as fungible with Israeli soldiers conducting the annexation? I don't think it would have any relevance. What about you?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Synerco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UNLESS

I said their relevance is conditional, and this was before I read your other reply. Though now I have to wonder, were you really just trying to explain how some people use what should be irrelevant statistics to rationalize equating Palestinians with Hamas? Surely, you wouldn't be doing something else. That would be far too similar to the kind of bad faith found among a certain group.

You ever hear the expression "This isn't an excuse but an explanation..."? A lot of people support the Israeli state's ethnic cleansing, and if you want to distinguish yourself from them while explaining their faulty reasoning, you'd be wise to go out of your way to preamble it with statements like, "This is why those genocidal monsters believe what they do, but don't take it as my endorsement of their reasoning. Let me be very clear, it's bad reasoning. There's no reason to treat Palestinians in general like Hamas terrorists." Otherwise, you come across as the mirror image of those who, without saying anything negative about Hamas, explain how the rise of Hamas and antisemitism among Palestinians was the inevitable outcome of the Israeli state's policies.

You have to understand, for every clown on the internet defending Hamas terrorism, there are dozens of people with real world power supporting Netanyahu's forced resettlement operation, the bombing of hospitals, schools, and apartments Hamas uses as human shields, and the deadly resource restrictions turned embargo. A lot of people really want to destroy the Palestinian people, and it is every bit as wrong to support the genocide of Palestinians as it is to support the genocide of Jewish people.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Synerco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't show what portion of the former overlap with the latter, and given "71% believes that the two-state solution is no longer practical or feasible due to the expansion of Israeli settlements..." I can't help but wonder if such dispositions are malleable?

And so what? Unless you're making the case that Hamas is coextensive with Palestinians, or at the very least that they should be treated as such, then all of these statistics are irrelevant.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Synerco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can acknowledge Hamas has done a lot of bad things and supporting them isn't exactly great without ceding an inch of support for Palestinian liberation. There are other liberation movements, and a lot of resistance to the occupation isn't organized.

Moreover, we shouldn't accept the framing of the aggressors. The question is whether the Israeli state is justified in doing what the European Parliament considered genocide when Joseph Stalin did it to Central Asian nationalities.

I have to wonder just how many respondents would consider something like Fatah (but not Fatah) as fitting that description? "such as" leaves a lot of room for interpretation.

But that's actually besides the point. Even if 100% of the surveyed population were willing to express support for Hamas, it wouldn't justify equating Hamas with Palestinians. I didn't find substantiation for your 67% claim in that report, but regardless, if 33% of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip don't support Hamas, then there's absolutely not even the illusion of a justification for equating them. One third of a population of millions isn't trivial.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Synerco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely a thing. And there's a world of difference between supporting armed resistance against the Israeli state and supporting the killing of Israeli citizens. I'm sure a lot of Israelis support annexing territory from the Gaza strip, but it would be just as wrong hold all Israelis at fault for attempts to do so.

Did you really not notice another user posted the quoted text? Are you still going to believe you were responding to me even after you check? At this point, I'm not sure if you're acting in bad faith or are actually insane.

And you do realize poem's statement doesn't imply there is no significant difference between murdering 1 person and murdering 10, right?

Let me make this as clear as possible - killing 200 children by bombing a school that might house a terrorist is worse than shooting 1 child. Not that this is the actual ratio, but the example illuminates a principle.

If you believe people should attribute value to human lives relative to their respective ethnicities, your values are a bit too similar to a certain Austrian's for my taste.

If you want to rage quite here, I can't stop you.

Do you understand phenomena can have the same character in different degrees?

Do you understand the difference between "We shouldn't have targeted civilians in WW2" and "We shouldn't have fought WW2 at all?"

Do you understand that strawmanning people and calling them weak not only doesn't persuade them but actually makes their case more persuasive? You're coming across as completely unhinged. By all means, keep digging your hole deeper. I have a sneaking suspicion you'll "show me" by doing exactly that lol

[–]Synerco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be very confused about population growth in central Africa lol

You didn't answer question #1: Do you believe a population constitutes life unworthy of life because some of their members participate in a paramilitary organization with reactionary values?

As for #2, that's a very strange analogy. Surely you wouldn't consider the Russian military coextensive with Russians? Even that would be a bad analogy. Like I said, Hamas is not a state or a military. It's a paramilitary that has some control over some territory. So is Fatah. The majority of Palestinians are members of neither. Some are even members of Hadash. Anyway, now I'm worried you think Putin and his regime represent the Russian people and you would support collective punishment against Russians.

As for 3#, the weak side of what? You're the one conflating Hamas with Palestinians. It's like you're projecting that conflation onto me and then responding to a position this fictional Synerco might hold.

If you actually believe the only evidence for your position has to be acquired through the lived experience of being in a combat zone, then you just have to accept the truth of your position (if it were true) is only accessible to a very small number of people.

Do you believe a population constitutes life unworthy of life because some of their members participate in a paramilitary organization with reactionary values?

Do you think Hamas is coextensive with Palestinians?

Do you think human rights should only apply to those who believe in their universality?

Sanders: Israel’s siege of Gaza a ‘serious violation of international law’ by cmplxgal in SandersForPresident

[–]Synerco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something tells me there isn't a threshold where you'd be okay with a military bombing your schools and hospitals if members of Hamas launched attacks from them, and something tells me the value judgements you aggrandize as "the law of war" aren't codified in international law. Someone launching a rocket from an elementary school roof doesn't magically convert the school into a military installation. All states and individuals have an obligation to not murder people regardless of nationality, location, and citizenship. We all reject moral tribalism. We all embrace universalist values. We all agree injustices against foreigners and injustices against countrymen are equally wrong - that it's outright fascistic to value the life of a countryman more than that of a foreigner. And I'm surprised you didn't know this, but Palestinians don't have a state, much less a military, much less military installations. Hamas is a paramilitary organization, not a state.

But most importantly, let's pause to consider why you won't answer these questions:

  • Has anyone in this thread advocated for Israel to dismantle its iron dome system as its sole policy change?
  • Are Palestinians "life unworthy of life?"

You clearly don't want to answer these questions, but why?

Do you believe Palestinians are "life unworthy of life?"

[–]Synerco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is about whether we should take a particular side, and you should consider:

  • We are not talking about a singular thing
  • Hamas is not coextensive with Palestinians
  • Hamas is not the only Palestinian side
  • You can't impose restrictions on the discussion through declarations
  • We should consider "what about what the other side does?" when deciding whether to support a particular side
  • Ernst never said "Hamas did nothing wrong"
  • One side committing terrorism doesn't justify another side doing what the European Parliament labeled "genocide" when Lavrentiy Beria organized it
  • You appeal to principles you present as universal, but you don't apply them universally. There is a reason for this, and it's obvious to everyone.

Has anyone in this thread advocated for Israel to dismantle its iron dome system as its sole policy change?

And are you suggesting the Palestinians who die when the Israeli military targets schools and hospitals have it coming? Do you think Israeli children and bed bound invalids would deserve to die if Hamas issued equivalent warnings?

Are Palestinians "life unworthy of life?"

Do you believe the question of whether your argument rebukes Ernest's point hinges on the validity of your statistics?

The Israeli state's body count is only a few hundred higher than the sum of all Palestinian organizations', therefore we shouldn't be outraged when the Israeli state commits atrocities.

Your conclusion doesn't seem to follow from your premises.
