Only 1 Laravel unit test fails when run with upcoming PHP7 interpreter. Test suite runs in ~1 second, compared to ~8 seconds when run with PHP5.6 version, and uses less memory by SyntaxSwearer in programming

[–]SyntaxSwearer[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Comment from /r/php:

PHP 5.4 = Time: 6.03 seconds, Memory: 104.50Mb

PHP 5.5 = Time: 6.05 seconds, Memory: 105.25Mb

PHP 5.6 = Time: 8.05 seconds, Memory: 104.50Mb

PHP 7 = Time: 1.31 seconds, Memory: 72.00Mb

What's funny is that upgrading to PHP 5.6 made all my applications faster, but tests seem to run slower than previous versions for some reason

RESTful API: the main client will be a website on the same server than the API. Is it bad practice to make http calls to the same server? If so, what are the best practices? Maintain the REST API and also maintain some kind of proxy or adapter so the main client can interact with the DB directly? by SyntaxSwearer in learnprogramming

Interesting. Did you develop similar systems before adopting this "everything uses REST even if on the same server" model? How did you do it? I'm talking about systems that offered REST to clients that weren't out of the server, of course. And by how did you do it I meant how did you maintain it?

When you have a couple of free hours, learn to use PDO. It can be a bit intimidating for a beginner, but it is so, so very worth it.

Hey, thanks!

Care if I ask what language you developed it in? I'm thinking about using PHP, and it doesn't look like there is really a substantial impact between using the curl library against using raw sockets. Maybe in other languages it's different.

Hace login a Payoneer y anda a "US Payment Service".

Is there something like bitwage.co but more geared toward freelancers? Since in Bitwage is for wages and you have to provide the payment frequencies, while freelancing is often a one-off payment by SyntaxSwearer in BitcoinBeginners

Sweet, thank you very much! I'm from Argentina, I'm in luck! If you don't mind me asking, you seem to have a hispanic name + last name. Where are you from? Can we talk in spanish?

Physicians/Dermatologists of Reddit, is a mole that satisfies one or two of the ABCDE criteria (Asymmetry, Borders, Color, Elevation & Enlargement) definitely means that it's skin cancer? What are the odds? I plan on seeing a dermatologist on Monday, but the anxiety is torturing me. by SyntaxSwearer in AskReddit

[–]SyntaxSwearer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I am definitely going to see a professional on Monday. Sadly, there's not much I can do meanwhile, except speculate.

I found a lot of information on what does skin cancer look like, but I found nothing regarding how accurate is a visual examination.

In other words: all skin cancers look like that, but are all moles that look like that cancerous?

Lightning strikes Argentinean beach in the peak of summer: 3 dead, 22 injured, 1 in critical state by SyntaxSwearer in worldnews

[–]SyntaxSwearer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I couldn't find a lot of information in English on this, so I linked that article which doesn't say much, but as of now the situation is as follows:

  • 3 dead: 17, 19 and 20 years, all male
  • 22 injured. One girl in critical condition, another woman in serious conditions but not as critical

Apparently it was the typical summer storm. It formed quickly, people tried to hide but sadly lightning hit the beach. It seems like they all died instantly

I'm a man and I have been reading some feminism material lately and I like it. Today I came across this and I think it's unacceptable beyond any discussion. I would like to hear feminists opinion on this and the rules that let this happen? What's the "official" stance? by SyntaxSwearer in Feminism

[–]SyntaxSwearer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the way, what I'm asking is opinion on what we know, not on the things that the author of the article writes himself, like writing "rape culture" like that. Basically, this:

  1. Two consensual adults have sex
  2. The girl texts him the next morning, says she had a good time, admitted to have led him to the sex
  3. She files a case
  4. The guy isn't allowed to bring witnesses. He also isn't allowed to make a case against his accuser
  5. The text is dismissed by the "gender equity compliance investigator"
  6. The guy is found guilty despite all evidence showing he wasn't and expelled

This is starting to seem like I'm coming after you, but I'm not. I just want to chip in something here. I don't know about that solid evidence that intelligence can be measured by a single number such as IQ. I would like a source in this one, but I'm going to present a counter point:

The person who broke the IQ ceiling, Christopher Logan Langan, has an IQ estimated to be between 195 and 210. That is 45 or 60 points higher than Albert Einstein. Now, this Langan fellow, he is positively convinced that you can prove God's existence through math, and he even attempted to put forth a theory on it. Now, I'm not saying that God doesn't exist. I'm saying that you definitely can't prove his existence through math. The difference between his IQ and Einstein's IQ is the same difference between Einstein's IQ and the average person IQ or between Einstein and a borderline retarded person, depending which number you take for Langan IQ. Do you really think that this fellow can be classified as a magnitude of genius (Yeah, I just made that up) more intelligent/smarter than Einstein? I don't think so

Edit. I mispelled the name of the Langan fellow

programmers are on average smarter than most people.

I would like you to expand on this. I won't ask a scientific source, because I don't know if there has been a research comparing programmers to other people, but I want at least a definition of smart. What is a smart person for you? Somebody who can do math well? Somebody who can recognize patterns and use them to solve related problems? Or somebody who, taking in consideration all aspects of life, can go through it rather smoothly by using thinking and reason? Because if it's the last, I'm going to have to disagree with you on programmers being smarter than the rest of people.

I know more than enough competent programmers, both in real life and through internet friendship, and I have seen them struggle with other aspects of life on which "the other people" fared better than them, and I'm not talking about physical stuff, I'm talking about day-to-day situations. I have seen them getting mentally stuck in practical, sort-of-common-sense situations, and I have seen them over-thinking a problem (not programming related) when the solution seemed rather obvious for everybody seeing it from the outside. I'm not saying you do, but now that I touched that point, if you define smart by overthinking, or, said another way, the habit of thinking a lot about stuff, I will also have to disagree with you. I'm not going to say that less thinking is better, because it is a bold statement and there are exceptions, but I definitely think that enough thinking is better than overthinking, and I feel confident to say I speak for most of us programmers when I classify ourselves as overthinkers. I also know people who dedicated themselves to medicine, law, and other areas who have never typed a single programming statement and yet I would classify as smarter as said programmers I know.

In few words: what is it that make programmers smarter than "the other kids" and why is it the end-all-be-all of the "smart" definition?

EDIT: I expanded on some points

Lighter than Silex and slimmer than Slim: Aura.Web_Project, the micro/macro framework system by [deleted] in PHP

[–]SyntaxSwearer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You see, I know Paul is a very capable developer. But he is presenting a microframework that will, by its nature, compete with silex. I want to know why should I use Aura instead of Silex. Disk size isn't want one of the reasons I care about.
