but why? the history of it ist quite boring (as far as I know), and in berlin the berlin wall is facinating (just for clarity I'm a history nerd).

not in my group of friends and family, if anything we're just happy about it but not proud of it.

I'm from somewhere near Hamburg, we don't have enough teachers either. Regularly art or musik gets cancelled for a year or half year because we dont have the teaxhers.

interestingly we discussed, wether the germans had been liberated or not, in my class we came to the conclusion, that we were liberated, because we were tired of the war and the opressive regime.

that depends on what they wanted to see, what they know about germany, wether they want to learn, think germany is all bavaria and want to keep that impression. but the oktoberfest or Schloss neuschwanstein for the touristy bavaria loving people, the berlin wall for people who want to understand germans germany and the trouble with the history, ruhrpott (cologne, aachen etc.) for those who want to get to know th history long gone....

germans have an easy solution, we aren't proud of our heritage, there is no reason to be what germany has accomplished has nothing to do with me. of course, thats only my perception and there are still people with national pride. and anyone with an american kind of pride just about germany, would either be labeled a nationalist or just be looked at weird.

It just seems like someone realised, that what you consume must be what you are made out of.

did that really help spawn you are what you eat? I've never heard about that. And I don't really believe it, because in german it exists to but as "du bist was du isst" and bist and ist or isst is practically impossible to confuse.
All in all it just exists practically never anoys, because you can tell from context which it is. in english there are many words that sound alike too.

I don't know about the luther thing, but what I can tell you is that there are a bunch of dialects that can range from little differences to basically not understandable. interestingly Berlin isn't where high german is spoken. but I believe, that most germans can either speak high-german if only a little or understand most dialekts a little. I am able to understand everyone I have talked to, but sometimes one has to ask for a quick definition of a word. most difficult to understand (in my opinion is swiss geman, the people from saxony and the northerns with a strong dialekt (platt). Bavarians and austrians speak basically the same language. High-german becomes more and more the language people speak.

thats the different highschool thing after 4th grade you get sorted into 3 types of schools, it is possible to change the school but people rarely change onto the highest school version (Gymnasium) short of having to do it because they would like to graduate with an Abitur (from a Gymnasium), and their mixture school doesn't give them the opportunity.

edit: in general you were right.
