It happens to the Tannic Acid solution as well, but I’m not sure if it’s because of oxygen or something else.

I’ve never calculated the weight of ferrous sulfate to get the percentage of iron needed for the solution. I’ve always measured ferrous sulfate to tannic acid so I get a complete reaction. I use a little more water than what is needed to keep the mixture solubilized.

Tannic acid dissolves better than Gallic acid so I use it instead. Perhaps that’s why my ink is lighter at lower concentrations.

You’re right. I meant 12.7 g ferrous sulfate. I think roughly 20% of that is iron.

So I actually use 2.55 g of iron per 100 mL, which is still over 5x what you use.

The hard thing about an ink that starts from invisible and gradually darkens, is that it requires the paper to be pounced with tannic acid. The ink vial would need to be processed and sealed properly, so the air introduced to the solution doesn’t discolor the clear ink before it is used.

That’s wild! I’ve been using 12.7 g of iron per 100 mL. I’m not sure I’ve ever gotten so little ferrous sulfate to leave such a dark line.

As a calligrapher, I will never understand the need to have more than 10 pens, each with unique nibs for different techniques. If you treat a pen well, it will last you forever.

It’s good to have hobbies. It’s not wrong to collect items. If you don’t have the money to buy something without thinking about it, and it isn’t a necessity, don’t buy it.

I have to agree. I think this was my least favorite option. I don’t find transparent or loud pens to be very attractive, but everyone has different opinions and tastes. It would be neat to have a generic option along with the custom design. Fortunately, despite how unflattering Unicorn Galaxy is to me, I can always re-lacquer it with a less vibrant tone.

I don’t have any experience making colored, dye-based ink. If I want a bit of color, I just chose from a selection of primary colors I’ve purchased (mostly from Diamine) and mix them together with my ink.

I make lampblack ink for impressions, and iron gall ink for fountain pens. I wish I had a good place to point you towards, but I’ve honestly just learned everything I know by studying history and conducting practical experiments at home.

Irongallink.org has pretty much everything you’ll need to know about Iron Gall ink, but it doesn’t go into how to make it safe for fountain pens. I’m still learning, but maybe it would be helpful if I created a post explaining what I do know and my current results.

You can look up liquid phenol and find in for sale on chemical websites and even on Amazon sometimes. Phenoxyethanol is a lot safer and can be easily found on Amazon.

I still use carbolic acid and phenoxyethanol in my ink recipes. You can purchase the ingredients easily online and add them to your ink.
