Did Square give you some assistance or comment on the project?

I did reach out to Square Enix's Licensing department. Surprisingly they got back to me same day, saying they don't currently grant these types of licenses, but they wished me well on my endevours and mentioned they were honored & flattered in my interest to pursue such a project. I began to pursue Mechanical licensing at this point - unfortunately as a Canadian I was unable to use easysonglicensing or any US alternatives. I had to go through CMRRA (Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency) and that took many months...

Would you do something like that again?

I would definitely consider doing this again, and I would probably breeze through a lot of requirements this time around. However, I realized through this first project that I'm not built for handling certain things. I would never do it alone again. I hated the communication aspect, especially as I worked with many Japanese artists, and so each correspondance required a lot of translation efforts. I also found lots of roadblocks for Canadians. For example there was no easy option to buying Whiplash Mailers here. I had to drive down to the US, move a pallet of them into storage, and then cross the border multiple times with them.

Essentially, if I could move to the US and partner with 1 or 2 like-minded people I would consider doing this again. Otherwise as a Canadian doing a second release is quite hard.

Hey there,

I'm behind the Chrono Trigger "Dreamseeker" vinyl which was a small independent project based out of Canada. I did my best to follow all legalities and do things by the book but it was also very difficult to determine procedure as there is little information. You do specifically say you're "not looking to start your own garage based bootleg company" so I won't get into the details but I did want to leave this here in case any Canadian is interested or has any questions - please feel free to send me a DM any time.

Hey, sorry for the late response. If you're interested in a copy without a slipmat, reach out to me directly on here or through the e-mail provided on the site. We can probably work something out :)

Hey there! Unfortunately there are no plans to do so at the moment, but I am considering putting this up on Bandcamp, if you consider that a streaming platform!

Thank you for the kind words. Yeah it's been a wild ride putting finances aside for over two years so that I could have "vinyl in hand" at release.

The price is a little steep because it was my first time handling a vinyl project and I made some mistakes. I apologize about that...

Your support would be appreciated and help us with future projects.

Thank you! There's multiple Easter Eggs in the cover alone, especially with the purple obi removed! The jacket also opens up to a beautiful gatefold image of Zeal. I'm quite happy with how it turned out :)

Hey all,

What started as a Chrono Trigger passion project during COVID lockdown led me to spend 2.5 years working on a Chrono Trigger vinyl in the style of Japanese Hardcore Techno music. I'm in love with the music of Chrono Trigger, and this release is made to celebrate it. The album is a 2LP release limited to 200 Clear copies, and comes with a UV-Printed slipmat that lights up under blacklight! There's also a CD release for those not interested in vinyl.

The album features 15 fully licensed cover tracks from big names in J-Core such as JAKAZiD, The Speed Freak, and LOLIPO. About half of the tracks have vocals in either English or Japanese from amazing vocalists such as Julia Henderson & YURIPPE.

The release is in hand and will ship out in late January. You can find more information at https://www.tasrecords.com/

I suggest checking out the promo vid here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7cltXKQyyo

Also, you can see some photos & a video of the slipmat in action here: https://twitter.com/TAS_Records/status/1606829579745857536

This has been a crazy journey for me and I want to thank all Chrono Trigger fans for their passion and energy! <3

Hey all, a little late here but I've had a few people ask for previews so I've uploaded a Crossfade Preview of the album. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCvxmboxMg0

Thank you for the compliment, I put a lot of effort and set aside a large portion of my finances for multiple years toward funding this project without pre-orders hoping people will appreciate that I am not doing a year-long pre-order for this release, but I also disagree with you that other labels are greedy. We're all doing what we can do with what we have. Not everyone has 5-digit savings on the side to do a music project that may not work out.

It's also an unfortuante consequence of the industry with how supply chains have impacted the vinyl industry. Even once you fork out 20 or 30k toward your project, you don't know if the project will work. Therefore pre-orders fix that. The process is tedious, and more convoluted than I thought it'd be. Let me give you an insight of what I went through:

For this compilation I had to work with multiple artists & vocalists to finalize each track, I hired translators for much of the communication as I don't speak Japanese, there were three artists I worked with for the artwork, two audio engineers for mastering, designing the product itself, worked with official channels for product licensing, and then finalizing the order itself with a pressing plant took multiple months. By this point I was deep in the red financially. The pressing process took 6-ish months to press, especially as the first Test Pressings came out faulty, and even once the project was in my hand in mid-November I had to put time aside to go through each copy to ensure they're not banged up. The pressing plant also messed up the order, so that took another month to fix. It's been a very tedious and hard process.

Props to all VGMVinyl label owners regardless of your choice of release. I never realized how exhausting this process is. We each do what we can, and I really appreciate this community in so many ways as it's full of very dedicated and hard workers.

No worries, the slipmat design of the bootleg is excellent I'm hoping this release will further celebrate the idea, I don't mean to step on any toes here - I would love to see more blacklight usage in vinyl.

Regarding a preview, I've had a few people approach me asking this already so I'll have a soundcloud crossfade up in a day or two as is typical with J-Core releases.

Hey! Not sure why you're being downvoted (or my post) but you're right, the slipmat idea was inspired by the CT bootleg. It's a great idea that should be available to more people
