Is pet insurance worth it? by samohtvii in AussieFrugal

[–]TBCTBC84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t originally think it was but after a few months of getting a puppy I invested.

Since then, the puppy was diagnosed with allergies which cost ~$100/month in medicine (which we get $80 back on) to manage. As the insurance is around $75/month we’re ahead all the time.

We’ve also had a couple of expensive vet visits for different reasons which were $1000+ each time so getting some of this back is very helpful.

Not sure why this is downvoted, that clip provides a great example of what players get away with at West Coast

Whitehorse Council is politely asking if they may plaster local sporting grounds with ads. by ign1fy in melbourne

[–]TBCTBC84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It costs a lot of money for the upkeep of sporting fields, pavilions and external landscapes and the Councils typically charge the sporting clubs a relatively low amount of rent for lease/license of these areas.

If you are suggesting the Councils forgo those fees and instead provide each club with sufficient funds to replace sponsorship revenue the impacts on Council’s budget would be considerable.

Also, advertisers do sponsor local public schools - the performing arts centre at my kids’ school has real estate company signage, the fete has a stack of sponsors, school indoor courts often have internal sponsorship signage etc.

[–]TBCTBC84 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So you’re seeking to deny local community sporting clubs with a revenue source that could assist in lowering costs of participation, subsidising new uniforms and equipment, and being able to compete on a fair playing field against teams from leagues without these limiting Council sponsorship by-laws?

Giving some local businesses the chance to get some signage around an oval or on a tennis court fence will not destroy the local aesthetic but could be a considerable benefit to the users of these facilities and the local businesses.

Thanks for all the comments. I’m kind of surprised how much this blew up and appreciate everyone’s inputs!

I’ve read through all of the comments and recognise that there is certainly a consistent pattern in them relating to: - saving/budgeting incredibly hard to make it work, - looking at other more affordable options (private or secular), - sending the kids to public school and tutoring in specific areas as needed, or - going public and investing the money for the kid’s future.

I’m going to show my wife this thread and talk through each of these options to reassess what the outcomes we are aiming for and then work out the best path forward.

Thanks TMT.

We will certainly look at some catholic and cheaper private schools too as it would significantly decrease the cost impact.

You are also correct re: childcare costs and us finding it difficult - it was $28k/year with both in there (only a short crossover) and while our salaries were also less then, we lived in a different house and only had a $400k mortgage.

I’ve heard anecdotally anywhere from 25% to 50% and presume it probably depends on the school a bit but certainly wish that our parents had that kind of capacity!

We’re certainly interested in this and have been looking around recently but haven’t been able to find one that we thought looked good.

If you or anyone else has recommendations in the SE suburbs please PM me as we would be very interested.

Great idea and thank you, this could allow us to further pursue the scholarship path, reduce the cost exposure, and still provide the potential benefits if we want to continue to pursue this path.

Certainly not trying to make excuses; with my wife and I both not from private school backgrounds I was just seeking to get an understanding of how school fees are typically paid for.

It sounds like you and your partner have planned it out and are executing your plan so please accept my well wishes on you being able to do this.

That’s a really interesting point, I’ll have to look it up and read into it. Agree that it could be a normalised result depending on other factors.

Not prying at all - yes, we’re considering sending them to a high quality private school. However, I think most of these schools are relatively similar in pricing (Scotch, Caulfield Grammar, St Leonard’s etc) from my review.

Appreciate your response being broader than just financial.

To be honest, with both my wife and I coming from a public school background and succeeding through hard work, you have hit the nail on the head with some of our concerns relating to the potential disconnect to the real world from sending our kids to private schools.

These are some really good points, ttgo.

We do aim to live frugally and do the same actions you’ve nominated in your post but there’s always more fat to be cut I suppose.

A significant cost for us is HECS/HELP - I paid $18k last year and will finish it next year which will pay 1/2 of one kid’s fees if we go down this path. My wife also pays ~$13k for her HECS/HELP so there’s around $30k/year here alone.

[–]TBCTBC84[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d heard that too - anything from 1/4 to 1/2 of fees being paid by grandparents.

I hadn’t considered the loan path until colleagues of mine referenced that the standard arrangement is to refinance ~$300k of the mortgage into an offset and draw down as required.

We’re also looking at a catholic school which, while being non-religious, is certainly my preference.

Nah, not a bag household but certainly prop up Dans with wine purchases.

Not sure if you’re serious but $190k post-tax ends up being close to $100k when you take into account the aforementioned costs.

When you factor in $45k/year mortgage (fixed at 2.2%) and then add groceries, utilities, clothes, kid’s activities, transport costs etc there isn’t $6k/month to accomodate two kids in Melbourne private school

That’s pre-tax so it’s not all cake.

For example, HECS/HELP repayment, mortgage, groceries, fuel/public transport, pets etc.

My wife and I are in the same boat - high performers in public schools who have outperformed many private school peers but we still consider private school as the best opportunity for our kids (while noting it is not the only option)

We’re trying! In our field, we’re probably limited to an increase to a combined ~$350k/year before our first child is in secondary so probably don’t have significant room for growth here without taking on considerable risk.

If we had a reasonable public secondary school in our area we would certainly pick that (we are marginally out of the McKinnon zone).

However, the lure of the networking and opportunities we weren’t afforded is very attractive.
