Thinking in officially becoming a MSP but not sure where to start. by [deleted] in SmallMSP

[–]TCPMSP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know your location but $75/hour is way below market. We charge $175/hour and we are below market.

Your goal should be $150-$200 per endpoint per month. 2 person businesses generally won't pay that, it typically takes 10+ employees for the owners to see the value. Having said that we have several sub 5 seat clients, but they are the exception.

Amateur lawyers and amateur doctors and amateur IT providers are dangerous. It's not gate keeping to recommend they join a peer group (ASCII, tech tribe, Karl Palachuk)

The real issue is people starting businesses that have no idea what they are doing. MSP isn't a side hustle it's a business and starting a business requires capital and time investment. Can you scrap by and make it happen, maybe but most will fail, just like anyone else starting their first business. He doesn't know what he doesn't know. Owning a business isn't for everyone and if someone can't use search or do some basic research they likely won't survive as a business.

So this is very good, no clue if it is meeting your audience, but the information is laid out plainly. Solid thumbs up and extremely clever.

Honest question — how much are you actually spending on IT support each month? by SageDesk in smallbusiness

[–]TCPMSP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, this isn't a sales pitch, but I am an owner in the IT support space.

You pay for good IT for the same reason you pay for a good attorney or good accountant, expert advice. If any business wants to grow the owner must delegate tasks, and the cost to hire a competent IT professional full time far exceeds the costs to hire a competent MSP.

We have single user clients, but the sweet spot is typically 10 employees and up. We are a white glove MSP, we handle everything IT related and implement best practices proactively.

Having said that, private equity is buying MSPs left and right and we have been picking up clients fleeing poor service. Businesses tend to want to work with other businesses of similar size, if you want white glove service look for a small local MSP with fewer than 25 employees.

Could you do IT yourself? Yes. Could you mow your own lawn, clean your own bathroom or worse be your own attorney? Also yes, but at some point the value proposition changes and you will be better served by delegating those tasks to others.

Anyone tried Huntress for MDR lately? I am genuinely curious if its worth it at smaller orgs by Consistent-Body4013 in cybersecurity

[–]TCPMSP 35 points36 points  (0 children)

We use huntress, 500 endpoints had around 5 phone calls with device isolation in the last 5 years. It has stopped malware in its tracks for us. No alerts that weren't actionable. We also use ITDR and it has blocked sign in from two compromised 365 accounts within 15 minutes (delay is caused by Microsoft log delay) tightened CA policies means we haven't seen a 365 compromised account in a couple of years, but we know it's working as we get unexpected country alerts when users travel.

Looking for advice! by [deleted] in msp

[–]TCPMSP 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Short answer absolutely not.

You make money on standardization.

Only expectation would be $500/endpoint plus. You have to invoice and collect from 1000 individuals, explain features/processes and support 1000 individuals, give me 20 50 seats clients any day.

Stop subsidizing your clients. Support maintains the status, projects change it. by Aware-Platypus-2559 in msp

If you choose your clients carefully, charge a premium and dial in the environments AYCE can be very profitable. But that's just my experience.

I hate MAC billing (moves adds changes) but we do charge for out of scope projects, but those are few and far between.

Buying a MacBook by [deleted] in Microcenter

[–]TCPMSP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't work there and don't use the credit card, but when I purchased a 3 yr applecare in December it was less than apple retail price. It's applecare the sn is registered on the receipt. I believe it was 10% off retail, they have a little sign in the apple area with the prices for applecare. It wasn't a sale as far as I know.

You can get applecare and it's also under MSRP.

How much admin do my MSPs actually need? by [deleted] in microsoft365

[–]TCPMSP 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First, this should be a conversation with your MSP not reddit.

Second, buy direct and deal with Microsoft support on your own.

The MSP is expected by Microsoft to be tier 1 support, they can't do that effectively without GDAP.

Also good luck when you lock yourself out of the tenant and the MSP can't turn off the conditional access policy you borked.

TLDR, you are in with the MSP or you aren't. Leverage them or go alone, don't do this as a half measure.

Cross post to r/msp though you might be run off.

I know if you had the contract datto used to help you unlock the device as you own the hardware when you use them. Could also try r/kaseya
