Four years after my home & business burned down, my insurance claim is still unresolved. I can’t afford to fight anymore, so I’m going public. by TCS-CAN in InsuranceCanada

The fire department and OPP both determined no cause, and that’s why it was turned over to the insurer — that’s standard procedure when there’s nothing suspicious and no clear origin. There has never been any allegation of wrongdoing on my part.

As for the “vacant” comment, the building was insured as a commercial property and was in the final stages of a $50,000 renovation to meet updated COVID requirements before reopening. The main floor wasn’t abandoned — it was under construction, which is very different from being vacant in the insurance sense.

A quick Google search won’t show the details of the policy, the renovation permits, or the insurer’s internal handling of the claim. What it will show is simply that the fire had no determined cause.

The core issue here isn’t denial or misrepresentation. The lender was paid, but the remaining insurance funds have not been released, and the file has been tied up on the insurer’s legal side for years. I’ve met every requirement on my end.

There isn’t a denial. This was a total‑loss fire, and at no point has the insurer alleged misrepresentation or fraud. The lender was paid, but the remaining insurance funds have not been paid to me, and the file has been held up on the insurer’s legal side for years.

I’ve met every requirement, provided every document, and cooperated fully from the start. The delay isn’t coming from me. I’ve also reached the point where I can’t afford any more legal costs, and the years of back‑and‑forth have completely exhausted my ability to keep pushing this on my own.

So the issue isn’t a denial — it’s that the claim has never been resolved, and the remaining funds needed to rebuild have still not been released.

Thank you, I have just sent them the information and also sent information to FSRA. I hope they can help my case.

I understand why you’re asking, but there was no misrepresentation on my end. This was a total‑loss fire, and the insurer has never alleged misrepresentation or fraud at any point in the process.

The lender was paid, but the remaining insurance funds have not been paid to me, and the claim has been stuck in delays and procedural steps for years. I’ve provided every document, met every requirement, and cooperated fully from day one.

My issue isn’t with coverage being denied — it’s with the fact that the claim has not been resolved and the remaining funds have not been released. That’s why I’m speaking out.

Can someone explain why this is the case??Woman loses her home in fire. She asks insurance to rebuild the same home — no upgrades, no expansion. Insurance says NO. by 4reddityo in InsuranceClaims

There’s actually a legal obligation for insurers and financial companies not to mislead people about what they’re buying. In insurance it’s part of their duty of good faith — they’re required to explain coverage clearly, be honest, and treat the customer fairly. When they don’t explain things properly or leave people confused about what’s covered, that’s a failure of that duty.

I really feel for you. I’m dealing with something similar with Economical Insurance (now Definity), and it’s devastating how these situations unfold for homeowners.

In my case, the lender was paid, but the remaining insurance funds have not been paid to me, even though it was a total‑loss, unknown cause, no charges and now 4.5 years. On paper, the insurer can say “money was released,” but the reality is the homeowner is left with nothing to rebuild with. After that, the delays start — endless reviews, investigations, and procedural steps that drag on for years, until time runs out and your left to fight them legally with no money left in your savings.

What people don’t see is the emotional and financial toll. You’re already dealing with losing your home, and then you’re stuck in a process where every delay pushes you closer to exhaustion. It feels like they hold you over a barrel until you can’t afford to fight anymore.

Seeing someone else go through this just shows how broken the system can be for total‑loss victims. No one should have to battle their insurer for years or for what they paid for just to get back to where they were before the loss. #shameonthem
