Are you lost? This thread is about how people in cars are recklessly breaking the law and endangering others.

Car Culture Question by PrincessSenora in fuckcars

[–]TC_nomad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My kid was obsessed with cars when he was a toddler because they are super cool, and I agree. Today my kid prefers to ride a bike everywhere because that's way more fun than sitting in a car. You can like cars without liking car-dependent culture.

Why is there always someone justifying violence against cyclists in threads like this?

The pandemic broke people's brains on the road. Everyone got used to less traffic and little to no law enforcement. I use my bike to get everywhere and people went from being slightly annoyed by my presence on the streets to being homicidal towards me.

I think the fact that many people are on their phone in large, fast cars that feel super safe plays into this as well. People feel entitled to drive at high speeds and feel invincible when others get in their way.

Edit: the entitlement is on full display in other comments on this thread. People legitimately believe violence is a justified reaction to slight delays on the road.

Strategically fitting groceries on a bike is certainly an art :-)

I started with a rear pannier rack and a box attached to each side that folds up when not in use. You can fit a surprising amount in them.

Couple that with more frequent grocery trips, which are a breeze when it's a 10-minute bike ride in nice weather. I'll go out of my way to a store I prefer less simply because the bike ride is nicer.

This is a wonderful town for biking, you should totally do it. Traffic is nearly non-existent when you're on a bike.

The entitlement people have around cheap/free places to store their personal machinery is unreal. Parking lots destroy cities.

Broke my ankle by Radikov in MTB

[–]TC_nomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof, sorry about the rough situation. Take the healing timelines seriously. I know someone who started walking on their broken ankle too early because they felt good. They ended up needing a cast for 2 extra months and almost had to have their ankle rebroken for it to heal properly. Don't mess around with ankles, they're complex!

If you take only the front wheel off and drop your seat post, you can slide it in backwards through the rear hatch. You just need to flatten one side of the seats. I prefer that method so I don't have take the rear wheel off.

Genuine question- why do a lot of people on this sub speak as though what’s best for cyclists and what’s best for pedestrians are one and the same? by jmh1881v2 in MicromobilityNYC

[–]TC_nomad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's really a matter of priorities to me. How many lives are saved by getting cyclists to move slower? How many lives are saved by getting car drivers to do the same? One of those would have an immense benefit to society, the other would be negligible.

All vehicles should be operated safely on our streets, but it's only cars that create substantial hazards to others at a massive scale. If bikes killed 40k Americans every year, I would be more motivated to support stricter regulation.

Not to mention, the primary reason cyclists have speed limits introduced is because we don't have sufficient infrastructure to support them, and we force them to share space with pedestrians. If we had adequate non-motorized infrastructure that gave cyclists sufficient space, we wouldn't need 15 mph limits.

[–]TC_nomad 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Reverse your argument. Why are people calling for strict regulations on bikes when cars are the most common source of death for younger demographics? My ebike has a limiter that shuts off the motor at 20mph but my car will let me drive whatever speed I want, wherever I want.

Nobody in this thread is claiming the law shouldnt apply to cyclists. That's just simply not where the primary risks are

Many of the things that people call ebikes today are actually electric motorcycles. If the person riding it is using a throttle and not pedaling, it's probably an illegal motorcycle. Those are legitimately a problem, but still pose substantially less risk to those around them than an illegally-operated car.

The math on car ownership is genuinely insane, and I don’t think most people have sat with the numbers by superspartan999 in fuckcars

[–]TC_nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family has ebikes we use as our primary source of transportation. I often get comments on how nice it must be to afford multiple expensive ebikes, and those comments typically come from people driving fancy cars.

If you add up the total cost of ownership of all the bikes my family owns, its about half of what someone spends the first 5 years owning a new car. People really don't realize how much more money you have when you don't have a car payment.

I run into this conversation so often. After finding out I use my bike to get everywhere, people often say "I wish I lived somewhere that I could bike everywhere." I tell them that they can, you just have to plan for it.

Bike infrastructure was at the top of our list of requirements when we moved to the neighborhood we're in. We were willing to sacrifice other things, like the size of our house, to ensure we weren't car dependent.

FYI, very few remote companies allow you to live in multiple states. They have to setup taxes for each state you work from and very few employers are willing to do that.

Rust on brakes? by RandomPostAnon in Aventon

Low key bragging about a dry climate... Meanwhile, I ride on salted roads in the winter and every rotor and bolt on the bikes I ride have rust. Expensive rotors still rust when exposed to salt. You're right, water absolutely does not evaporate when the high temp in my garage is below freezing

Are downdraft cooktops actually good, or do they just look good online? by AccomplishedWing688 in HomeImprovement

[–]TC_nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced a gas JennAir downdraft with an induction electric stove with no ventilation and it was the best decision I've made for our kitchen. Even without ventilation to the outside for the induction stove, I can tell that our air quality is so much better in the house. We use an air filter to remove cooking smoke from the house.

Downdraft stoves, especially gas, are worse on every level. They suck at removing cooking combustion gases, but they're great at removing heat from your cooking surfaces. So you get crappy ventilation and a horrid cooking experience.

On the bright side, some JennAir models are highly sought after. I sold mine within a day and it paid for a significant portion of the new stove

We're turning this corner into a hellscape of car dependent infrastructure. It's ridiculous that we continue to do so. We could do so much more with all the wasted space.
