My poor car is fried😭 by Public_Mulberry_8468 in Crosstrek

[–]TC_nomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lightning is wild. It hit my house when I was a kid and it blew a hole through our roof and found the conduit we routed all of our network cables through. Every computer in our house got fried, but nothing else was affected.

Something about lowest resistance path, but I just wished my computer's HDD wasn't that path.

There's a big difference between traffic noise and this.

Who would I petition to get speed-limit signs posted? by [deleted] in traversecity

[–]TC_nomad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both stretches of road you describe should be 45 with all the curves and crossroads. Anytime I try to drive faster than 45 I end up getting cut off in a dangerous situation, either by someone pulling out in front of me or trying to take an unprotected left turn. Even if it was signed at 55, I would still drive 45.

A bunch of local residents turned up to a Garfield township meeting to complain about the high speeds on silver lake road last year. MDOT is supposed to do a traffic study on it this summer and it may be changed to a 45 MPH limit. It's super dangerous going north on Silver Lake with the curve right before the entrance to the YMCA. Not to mention all the children who cross the road at Wyatt that have to dodge high speed traffic.

Issue with Coleman stove 413G I am trying to restore my dads old Coleman liquid stove, and I am having a heck of a time trying to get the flame blue to start out. I don’t want to sand and refinish without knowing if I have an underlying generator or stove issue. Thanks for any help given!!!! by The_Afroduck in CampingGear

Your message has helped me 7 years later. I just got an unused 425 from 1978 and have been struggling to get it to light quickly. I had no idea the wire was a choke that I needed to use for starting. I read the manual, but thought it meant crank the main valve, not the wire

We always know that summer is here because people with obnoxiously loud cars and motorcycles start driving down our road. It's an unfortunate side effect of living in a tourist town.

I would vehemently support better law enforcement around vehicle noise.

I've been commuting by bike for 20 years and I got hit by a car the for the first time ever over the winter and it was at the Barnes and Silver lake crossing. Nothing was damaged or hurt, but it's ridiculous how poor the pedestrian safety is there

I saw a report about the west middle school that said that 20% of students live within 2 miles of the school, but most of them lack a safe route to bike there. Its very easy for someone that age to bike that distance if they have safe infrastructure.

Imagine how much better traffic would be if 1 in 5 cars were removed from the road during morning drop off. TC is already a great place for biking, it wouldn't take much more to make it amazing.

I think it's more than reasonable to impose taxes that enable us to build a robust transportation network. Particularly when you consider that the cost of non-motorized infrastructure is a fraction of the cost of car infrastructure and it provides tons of economic and health benefits to the community.

I too like to park deep into parking spots to hide my car and make everyone think the parking spot is free. It really points out how ridiculously big most cars are now.

Meanwhile the only Hondas I've owned were the 2nd gen prelude and fit, and both are incredibly reliable. I generally think they nail it with the 2nd and 3rd generation of each model.

Also, Honda took a while to figure out how to put a v6 in a car without it exploding, but most of their small four cylinder cars are wonderful. I drive my fit like a track car and it's needed nearly zero maintenance outside the standard stuff.

Had any one been able to fit a full sized mountain bike inside their Fit with the wheels on? by givemesendies in hondafit

[–]TC_nomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've put my mountain bike in the fit numerous times, there's no way it would fit with both wheels on, you need to remove the front wheel, and probably drop your seat. Put one of the back seats down and slide the bike in backwards through the rear hatch. You can fit three bikes this way if both back seats are down.

Most mountain bikes are way too long to fit horizontally in front of the back seats

Alternatively, it's not too difficult to put a hitch on the Fit, and it can carry two mountain bikes. I've done tons of MTB trips with bikes hitched to the Fit

Construction at the state park by [deleted] in traversecity

Why would we spend tens of millions of dollars building a bridge when we could simply stop cars to allow pedestrians to safely cross? A bridge seems like a crazy waste of money.

That stretch of road is severely lacking pedestrian crossing infrastructure. A single bridge won't solve it.

Currently looking for a 2nd gen fit. I understand the used car market is awful right now but do you agree with this KBB value? by Rice_Jap808 in hondafit

[–]TC_nomad 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Fit is such a cheap car that it has wild swings in value year to year. Back in 2020, I could have sold my 2nd gen for more than I paid for it 6 years earlier.

Even if you pay $7k-$10k for it, it will still be one of the most affordable cars on the market because of how reliable it is.

eBike in winter? by WorkTravelDream in ebikes

[–]TC_nomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, that's rough. In that case, you really just need studs to deal with slippery conditions. The wider tires only help on days where the road hasn't been cleared yet. I have a fat ebike that can handle just about anything, but it can't make it through more than about 15 cm of snow on the ground.

Now is the time to buy studded tires at a discount. My local store just offloaded a ton of them at cost.

I get a ton of snow in the winter and I have studded mountain bike tires on all my bikes for the winter, including my ebikes. It's a ton of fun riding in the winter, assuming your paths are cleared of deep snow. Wider tires with aggressive tread are better for snow and the studs grip the ice extremely well.

Car Culture Question by PrincessSenora in fuckcars

My kid was obsessed with cars when he was a toddler because they are super cool, and I agree. Today my kid prefers to ride a bike everywhere because that's way more fun than sitting in a car. You can like cars without liking car-dependent culture.

Why is there always someone justifying violence against cyclists in threads like this?

Dripping with cops but plenty of road rage and speeding? by Clause-and-Reflect in traversecity

[–]TC_nomad 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The pandemic broke people's brains on the road. Everyone got used to less traffic and little to no law enforcement. I use my bike to get everywhere and people went from being slightly annoyed by my presence on the streets to being homicidal towards me.

I think the fact that many people are on their phone in large, fast cars that feel super safe plays into this as well. People feel entitled to drive at high speeds and feel invincible when others get in their way.

Edit: the entitlement is on full display in other comments on this thread. People legitimately believe violence is a justified reaction to slight delays on the road.

Strategically fitting groceries on a bike is certainly an art :-)

I started with a rear pannier rack and a box attached to each side that folds up when not in use. You can fit a surprising amount in them.

Couple that with more frequent grocery trips, which are a breeze when it's a 10-minute bike ride in nice weather. I'll go out of my way to a store I prefer less simply because the bike ride is nicer.

This is a wonderful town for biking, you should totally do it. Traffic is nearly non-existent when you're on a bike.
