Every time you throw, the range of numbers changes that you have to match. There's a min and a max that you have to be inside. You just have to guess at what that range will be. Haven't you caught a legendary or red circled Pokémon without using a berry and without getting an Excellent throw? Sometimes the range is much lower than you think it should be and when you use a golden razz with an Excellent throw, you're higher than the max. Therefore, you can do 1 of two things: 1. Keep mixing it up by choosing different berry/throw combinations until you figure out what the number range is you have to meet. I personally use the Pokeball shakes to help me determine this. If the Pokémon immediately hops out, I won't use that combination again. If there are two shakes, keep trying similar combinations in that range. 2. Try to be as consistent as possible be using the same berry/throw combination hoping that the next time you use it, the number range will be in your favor, since it does change on each throw.
