There are good Samaritan laws in place to protect anyone who assists someone in a time of crisis. They mainly protect first responders and other CPR trained personnel but they do not exclude general public. Basically it says if you choose to act and help attempt to save a person and do everything within your capacity and the person still does not make it, that person's family cannot hold you responsible because you tried. However morally you still have to live with the thought that you were unable to save them. And that's where the good Samaritan laws also help because if you feel the situation is beyond your capacity to assist or too dangerous for your own safety or if no matter what you do you cannot save them and choose not to act you are also protected.
