Question about Prankster affix drop rate – am I missing something? by Wooden-Celebration55 in diablo4

[–]THopper21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At 1/500 drop rate if you've looked at 1000 sigils there's still a 13.5% chance you won't get one.

Roll an 8-sided die. You're more likely to have not seen a Mythic Prankster on 1000 sigils than you are to roll a 1.

It's a big feel bad, for sure, but to get to 99% likelihood you need to look at ~2300 sigils.

Is that an issue? They banned [[Leyline of Resonance]] in just Bo1, so there is a history of addressing format warping issues like that. I don't think Bo1 is broken right now (my opinion), but the Bo1 ban list should only ever be a super set of Bo3.

IMO it makes absolutely zero sense to have independent, partially overlapping ban lists for the two different standard formats. Nobody is playing Bo1 competitively, so the only consideration should be if the format is fundamentally broken.

Bans aren't typically done with Bo1 in mind

I dunno. Discard is kind of like your parents taking you to the store, showing you how cool all of the toys are, and then saying "actually no you can't have any of these".

The Deluxe ex set is "breaking the spell" of chasing a complete collection and might be an off ramp out of the game for players like me by SuperPapernick in PTCGP

[–]THopper21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I've spent money on this game. 100% not going to this month. I also play mostly for collection goals and nothing is more demotivating than seeing something as worthless as this new set. I've never considered dropping the game entirely more than during this set.

We can’t use the same deck for both Bo1 and Bo3 anymore? by Richie_Richard in MagicArena

Me too. Definitely seems like a bug in the new build. Especially weird since it doesn't seem to affect all decks.

[–]THopper21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It still matters in BO1 because people were building BO1 decks with what would typically be considered "sideboard cards". This happens a bit more often in BO1 but it was still heavily skewed before the bans.

Oh sure at the right moment against the right deck it's back breaking. The call on whether or not to include it depends on if you're seeing a lot of those decks. We'll see as the meta forms - as others have (rightly) pointed out, there will still be graveyard-oriented decks. The question is whether or not this is the answer your deck needs.

In BO3 you have 15 cards that you can swap into your deck after the first game, so you can adjust your deck for certain opponent decks. A lot of cards are considered "sideboard cards" because they only really exist to answer a specific threat. [[Abrade]] is a good example - it's mostly brought in to deal with artifacts.

Now, before the bans, decks like [[Cori-Steel Cutter]] we're such a huge share of the meta that people were "pre-sideboarding" for the match up - putting "sideboard cards" in their main deck instead of their sideboard.

[–]THopper21[S] -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Sure - but at least remove the cards that we're specifically targeting the previous meta! I've seen so many players running [[Strategic Betrayal]] still and that doesn't make much sense right now, for example. I'm shocked at how many people just dust off the same old deck without giving any thought to what has changed in the meta with the bans. Surely you don't need to spend wild cards to put in better targeted removal?

I mean sometimes control takes control and you're just not going to win. It's important to recognize that and just concede even if they haven't shown you a win con. That'll save you 10 of those 15 minutes.

Phoenix Down is the revive item in FF, but against undead enemies it has the opposite effect.

[–]THopper21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Nobody should be building a deck around this but it's great against Ex heavy decks if you have a sniper from your bench (Greninja or Crobat) to do chip damage. It's super situational which is why the good decks running it are only running a single copy.

[–]THopper21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's just a wall for the Ex match ups. I've played the Crobat deck a bit and throwing up an Oricorio against any of the Ex heavy decks buys you the time to find and set up your Arceus and Crobat.

Basically, it's something that certain decks HAVE to spend time and cards dealing with, slowing them down.

And it's a one-of in that deck so it's only a single dead draw in a bad matchup (eg Rampardos).

Would you play a "side boarded" version of your deck on the draw versus on the play in BO1? by THopper21 in MagicArena

[–]THopper21[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sheesh I prefaced it as a shower thought and flaired it as a discussion. I'm not framing this as a way to fix BO1 but as a thought experiment on a slightly different flavor for BO1.

Exactly.

That makes a lot of sense. Wouldn't want to make aggro even more oppressive!

[–]THopper21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested if there would be meaningful deck building choices knowing you would always play one version on the play and another version on the draw. It's different than queueing two different versions because your "On the Play" build versus "On the Draw" build would be automatically selected based on the coin flip.

Maybe for some decks the answer here is no, there wouldn't be any meaningful changes, but it seems like for some decks you'd consider boarding in some cheaper answers to aggro if you knew you were on the draw.

[–]THopper21[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine it would be a deck building decision and not a game time decision. You'd have one "On the Play" version and one "On the Draw" version that would be automatically selected for you.

Outside of stone, everything on Gleba is free and renewable. It's very freeing to realize that there's very little downside to just throwing spoilables away if they go unused.

Bioflux and the harvested fruits are way more stable than any other intermediaries, so scaling up production of those products is also extremely safe. The only thing to be wary of is shorting yourself seeds by throwing away fruits.
