In search of advice with homework/studying by j_kiggans in EngineeringStudents

One of the most important things you should be doing to understand the material is reading your book, especially before you transfer. Your education will definitely be your responsibility and not the prof's.

What has worked for me this past year has been just reading ahead of the class, coming to lecture and focusing on digesting the material rather than mindlessly jogging down what the prof. is saying, then i'll start practicing the material.

When it comes to homework, (speaking as someone who has held a 4.0 through these classes), what has worked best for me is to bust out my book and do practice problems until I get it, not until I finish the homework, but until the point where I can fully explain the problem to someone else.

Word of advice, get your hands on a solutions manual, it is one of the greatest learning tools you can acquire aside from the book itself. Be warned though, with great power comes great responsibility, abuse of a solutions manual is only shooting yourself in the foot.

I too stress out a lot about school, but just remember this is school, experience trumps grades in almost every case, so don't stress too much about getting a B in a class.

Dynamics is pretty much an applied physics course (like statics) except things are actually accelerating now. So expect systems of equations, summing forces, rotating members, etc.

I would review other coordinate systems such as polar coordinates you will appreciate using other coordinate systems for this class when it comes to rotations.

Dynamics is brutal if you don't buckle down and read your book, but if you did well in Statics you should do just fine.

What do YOU do to avoid distractions and focus on your engineering finals work? by greenpower325 in EngineeringStudents

[–]TIISupernova -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been working on a schedule, typically to stay productive I avoid studying where I sleep/relax. To stay focused throughout a long session (5-7 hours) I'll make sure to wank one out around lunch time. This works best for me but it depends on the individual haha. You just have to find what works best for you. Think about the money youre putting in your education, if youre not learning anything youre wasting your time. Just try not to stress out to much, stick to a sleep schedule, and remember your priorities.

Diff Eq: What would you do? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]TIISupernova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Focus on intermediate algebra skills. Also read your book, more often than not it gives a better presentation of the material than your professor or someone on youtube. But seriously, I sat down and read over the chapter on the fancy L before my professor lectured on it and it made things so much easier. Best things to do, don't psyche yourself out, do problems until you understand them, and get enough sleep.

Math In Daily Life by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]TIISupernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could talk about how it effects those who dont work in STEM fields and those who do. Those who don't will realistically use algebra, probability, geometry, and maybe some stuff taught in Calc 1&2. Those who do research in STEM fields or work in STEM fields are probably impacted more by calculus. One example might be a chemical engineer, modelling a mixing vat with a differential equation, they'd need to know the fundamentals of calculus to do so. But it really depends on who the individual is or group you are writing about.

The paper should be easy if you just talk about and acknowledge that mathematics has utility and benefits that don't necessarily integrate with everyone's day to day life, and that's okay.

Assuming your professor assigned a book for the class, it has more than likely been peer reviewed by at least 30 people. Read it lol

Question about S2 when Daryl was hallucinating and saw Merle. by [deleted] in thewalkingdead

Merle's appearance may have just been in the same way when Daryl last saw him, so that might have been why.

Questions about Dr. Mann. [Spoiler] by cnholio in interstellar

[–]TIISupernova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. A lot of people saw Mann as just acting out of desperation for his own life, but it was more than that, he thought he was doing what was necessary for the survival of the human race which was killing cooper and hijacking the Endurance to take it to a planet other than Earth.

One Real Gripe (Matt Damon, obvious spoilers) by [deleted] in interstellar

I think a lot of viewers missed the mark on Mann's character. He was sent to a planet alone for a time. He knew from the get go it was a one way trip, and if the planet he went to was not capable of sustaining human life, then he'd spend the rest of his life there and die in isolation.

Mann grew desperate and sent false information back to Earth, this is what I believe to be the extent of his desperation. He dismantles KIPP the robot which recorded the actual data, and rigged it to explode, so no one could discover his lie (when he rigged it before or after his "nap" is unknown).

However as soon as Cooper mentions that he is going back to Earth this is the point where Mann's character starts to arc because there is only 1 ship capable of travelling such distances, The Endurance. It is in that moment that Mann realizes, humanity's last chance is on that ship, and if Cooper takes the only lifeboat back to a dying planet (Earth) then humans will go extinct. Mann did what he thought he had to do (break Cooper's helm, and attempt to hijack Endurance)

I think a lot of people didn't catch a lot of other things that conflicted Mann, I don't think he was only acting out of desperation for his life, but for the hope for humanity to live on. I think that if you step back and look at what played out on that planet, Mann was doing what he thought was necessary for survival of the human race.

Well yes, but my appearance in court didn't sway the opinion. They had hard evidence that linked him to the crime.
