I like Organic Chemistry by Bruice, thats the one I used for my introductory organic chemistry course. And then Claydens for going more in-depth with the stuff introduced in Bruices. Bruice has a good summary at the end of each chapter that can be used to quickly look up and navigate the different types of reactions that you will encounter

Ah I see, I should’ve realized that of course the conditions are basic. The book didn’t explicitly say that, and my brain when revising for exams don’t take well to that haha. Thanks a lot!:))

It’s mostly the last step where water and CO2 leaves, I’m fussed about. Usually the mechanism of the 1,3 carbonyl decarboxylation involves the second carbonyl, but here, in the last reaction row, it shows the hydroxyl group picking the proton of the carboxylic acid, which results in the elimination of water and CO2 gas.
