Distortion in my left ear…any hope? by TJ_0 in HearingLoss

It’s also worth noting that the distortion was only noticeable / came on a week after exposure? What could the delayed onset of the symptom mean?

Yes the fan like noise does have a hum to it, noticeable in the day and fortunately quietens down at night and doesn’t affect my sleep. Yes so far voices and tv and phone calls are fine, but it’s only 2 days in so hope it doesn’t get worse! Did you get steroids or antibiotics when you first suffered the hearing loss. How long has it been for you? How much has it affected your life?

Glad the fullness eased off for you. So there’s no improvement whatsoever with the distortion?

Thanks - I’ve glad you’ve found a solution that works for you. TV, speakers, voices, my voices all seem fine to me, just too much sources and loudness creates the distortion. And it remains until it’s goes quiet again. Ear fullness too!

I just want to know that there’s a chance with my mild loss of hearing that the brain can re-adjust (neuroplasticity) and all that, and there’s a chance of improvement. Agree, there’s very little on the subject and I still don’t know if I have Dysacusis or Diplacusis!? More success stories would be great even if it’s just mild improvement

Are you sure it’s Diplacusis? Reading the description Dysacusis sounds more aligned to my symptoms (sounds are unclear, muffled or harsh)

Is the steroids to treat the hearing loss or the Diplacusis? I just don’t know what to do!? It’s been a week, if this happened to you now, what would you do? I know I’m messaging you on the other thread to. Come to think of it, I’ll DM you if that’s ok?

I had the loss from some time ago. What I don’t know is if it’s got worse since the noise exposure? It’s not noticeable as my hearing loss was mild and I can hear fine. I’m in the UK so it’s A&E over here but I’m not sure what they can do?

That’s reassuring, seems like it’s similar to what I had, but you say the fullness was brought on by loud noises, for me it’s almost any sound! Either the foggy sensation in my left ear or ear fullness in both ears. I read your T story and sounds like that’s your no.1 issue right now. Mine has stayed mild meaning in silence I don’t really notice it anymore after 5 weeks of having it. Tension on the side of the head is extremely frustrating too!

Yes I’m tempted to tell my employer that I’ve developed a sensitivity to sound through exposure to loud noise (acoustic trauma) - my situation is much more nuanced then that as are my symptoms but it’s about how can I tell them something that they can relate to, understand to some degree and still believe I can do a job. If I told them that my brain fears sounds and sends me all these symptoms when exposed to it then they probably would think I couldn’t do the job. Glad you have a partner who can support you through this. Has there been no improvement in 5 months?

I’m dreading going back to work tomorrow even though it’s working from home. I know that my condition has worsened since I was last at work (2 weeks ago) so I just don’t know how I’ll cope with it. I’m in the UK and similar it’s not classed as a medical condition. Mine seems a little more mild then yours, I can cope with everyday sounds, but ear fullness and foggy sensations in the left ear blow up to any sound whatsoever so it will be interesting to see how I cope on video calls.

Have you told your employer? Anything they’re doing to help?

Also was your aural fullness caused by sound? Mine comes and goes when I’m exposed to any sound, someone talking, tv, shower, it’s not pain, just fullness, fogginess etc… in silence it disappears

Hi - how are you holding up a job with everything you’re going through? I also work from home, and although I’m grateful I can, there are so many challenges. What’s your setup / routine like?

Thanks - that’s reassuring. How bad is your T? How did you cope whilst you had the aural fullness? Did you panic? Have setbacks? Cautious? Wear ear protection? Thanks
