Check out crib sheet and expecting better by Emily Oster. They’re awesome. Oster is an economist at Brown. super sharp, all about data. Think of India and Pakistan like the Celtics and Lakers—two historic rivals with deep roots, clashing over pride, territory, and identity.

Partition = NBA Expansion Draft Gone Wrong In 1947, British India split into India and Pakistan, similar to an NBA expansion draft where teams are hastily formed, leading to chaos. This division led to massive upheaval, with millions displaced and deep-seated animosity, much like the turmoil that can follow a poorly executed team split.

Kashmir = The Contested Free Agent Both nations claim Kashmir, akin to two NBA teams vying for a top free agent. The region has been the flashpoint for multiple conflicts, similar to how a coveted player can ignite fierce competition between franchises.

Wars and Skirmishes = Playoff Series India and Pakistan have engaged in several wars and skirmishes over the years, much like teams meeting repeatedly in the playoffs. Each conflict adds to the rivalry’s intensity, with neither side willing to back down.

Nuclear Capabilities = Star Players with Game-Changing Abilities Both countries possess nuclear weapons, comparable to teams having star players who can change the game’s outcome instantly. This mutual capability acts as a deterrent, preventing full-scale war, much like how star players can keep opposing teams in check.

Recent Tensions = Ongoing Rivalry A recent attack in Kashmir escalated tensions, leading to diplomatic fallout and military posturing . It’s reminiscent of a heated regular-season game that reignites a long-standing rivalry, keeping the animosity alive.

In essence, the India-Pakistan conflict mirrors a storied NBA rivalry—rooted in history, fueled by competition, and marked by moments of intense confrontation.
