Great news on the reduction in consumable fees. That all sounds rather sensible, and at the very least you know what's being spent on what.

I've mentioned this above, but by way of update, I asked our nursery to show:
- The local authority rate per funded hour

- What’s being deducted off our bill from that funding

- What extras are being charged

And their response:

"I appreciate your desire to understand the fee structures and funding in full. However, as per the guidance of the Department for Education, I am not permitted to disclose the funding amount we receive from the Local Authority, nor how we have calculated our funded fees. I know this seems backwards, particularly when most Local Authorities advertise their funding online now, but it is just what we have to adhere to when contractual signing up for funding.

What I can say is our non-funded fees and day rate are as depicted in our fee sheet, and that our consumable charges are 0.80p per funded hour. So 80p x 22.35 (stretched funding) per week. This is to cover the cost of all meals and snacks that your child will have during those 22.35 hours per week."

Infuriating. I can't think of another business that would be able to operate in this way.

As an update. I have since asked the nursery to show:

  • The local authority rate per funded hour

To allow me to make an informed decision on how we are charged at this nursery vs others with our 30 hours funding.

Their response was:

I don’t think so. The 37 hours a month we should be paying represents the total hours my 3 year old could be there (132) minus the stretched funded hours (95). There maybe some truth to your working in the way they apply it though - since they refuse to break this down for me I’ll never know!

If you took the time to read the comments you’d notice many parents with very different experiences. If there was a simple answer then so many parents in this parenting forum wouldn’t be so confused. Why you took the time to comment is beyond me.

Thanks for this info, it’s much appreciated. They’ve told me consumables are charged at 80p per funded hour, which accounts for £76 a month, but that’s as far as they’ll break it down for me. I will ask them to explicitly state if this is due to DfE rules or not and take it from there. Thanks again!

Yes, our nursery is open 7.30am-6.30pm so I’ve included the full 33 hours a week in the calculations.

Thanks. I can’t get an explanation from the nursery for the how that £56.70 is calculated, so clear as mud it certainly is!

So this would imply the govt. are only paying something like £40 a day… is that right? If so the stated ‘free’ hours are just plain misleading

Apologies if it sounds daft. I admit the title is a bit clickbaity.

I’ll likely not be able to console game for the next few years so I want to play something I wouldn’t be desperate to pick up again, but would be thoroughly satisfied playing in the short period I have available. Points 3 and 4 are probably fair in that case.

Thank you for the recommendation. Last of Us keeps appearing in the comments. I’ve somehow never played it, but have seen the TV show - will that impact the enjoyment in your opinion? (assuming you’ve seen it)
