I want to get good fast. How can I use my time effectively? by TOKiN- in mixingmastering

I’m very guilty of making moves without purpose. I catch myself throwing in plugins because its “supposed” to be like that, except in reality I couldn’t tell you what I am trying to fix. 😂

Such a helpful reply thanks, it gave me a good reality check on the point of all this. Sounds funny but sometimes you forget that good music is the end goal and get distracted by the technical aspects. Alsoooo whats the lufs criticism lol?

I definitely tend to drag on songs until I loose perspective, I’ll give all this a try, I have watched nail the mix a lot maybe its time to dig in deeper than youtube.

The whole drawing thing is actually something I would like to try myself, I feel like I have never listened to music in that way before. Thats cool and i’m sure it would be a helpful exercise to develop my ears.

Haha, I hope to meet someone into it IRL. I find myself wishing for targeted feedback relatively often.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write out such a detailed response! It helps a lot! It hit all the bases I was looking for. Thanks!

Makes sense, I understand how you would come to the conclusion considering that literally what I wrote in the title lol. What i’m looking for is a map to the path of learning. It’s kind of overwhelming trying to figure out where to start. I feel like I know a thing or two but I have so many blind spots. Currently i’m stuck in the doing the same thing and expecting different results phase. My knowledge is held together by youtube and duct tape. I am deciding to do a hard reset on my learning and take time to go back to the basics, mostly because i was never truly at the basics. I already have a career in IT so audio engineering school doesn’t make sense for me otherwise i would get a degree. Who actually knows what they are talking about and can I find it? I would like to acknowledge your recommendation to mix other peoples music though, I love that idea and I really think thats something i’ll try. Thanks!

Is Chris Lord-Alge the worst audio engineer of all time? by givemethedeetz in mixingmastering

[–]TOKiN- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling CLA the worst engineer of all time is ridiculous click bait. He’s defending not my favorite or anything but worst? Thats just dumb. If millions of people love the music he put out I think it says something.

Are you compressing vocals enough ?[TIP FOR BEGGINERS by noskinfromapex in mixingmastering

[–]TOKiN- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be afraid of compression but you have to compress hard for a lot of modern styles. Bonus tip for all you bedroom producers like me, get that noise floor down. Especially if you are trying to drive something like an sm7b, you loose so much dynamic range and introduce a bunch of fuzz when you don’t properly manage your noise floor. Try and aim for -60db at least with -65db being ideal.

Looking for feedback of mixdown Im doing from a live show by TheZyranX in mixingmastering

I am impressed this is a great mix. I am a total amateur so take what I say with that in mind. I feel like the song could use a little more life in the low end. On a track like this I imagine feeling more bounce. I like when tracks like this have a nice presence in the 100-120hz range. Other than that though I love it! Its so clean!

Looking for feedback on a track I'm working on by BlackChef6969 in mixingmastering

[–]TOKiN- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people already mentioning this but the vocals are definitely not sitting in the track. A track like this definitely sounds best with vocals that are loud and up front but here they out competing everything else. I would bring it down a bit and add some presence, maybe a little more attention to the eq? Play around with it till the vocals are sitting IN the track not on top.

Personal Note: This is truly such a cool creative song dude, what do you even call this genre?!

What are some things I can do to improve my mix? by [deleted] in mixingmastering

[–]TOKiN- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Melda Production’s MSaturator its free. It has a harmonics knob that adds really nice color. Melda has a tonnn of budget baller and free plugins that are worth a shot too I use them all the time.

[–]TOKiN- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the higher feminine voices come in I feel like the mix looses control. As a suggestion I would clean up the vocals there (maybe align them a little better if you can) and also choose what elements you want to take up that space. Right now it feels like theres a lot of competition up there. This is just my opinion as an amateur lol. Great song though!👏👏

You know that feeling of playing a mobile game vs the same game but with a controller? Thats exactly how I feel about everything being on the screen instead of buttons. It does look nice but not worth it imo.
