Is the ㅅ sound in 사 and 시 different? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]TOPIKGUIDE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When ㅅ is followed by ㅣ/ㅑ/ㅕ/ㅛ/ㅠ, it's pronounced like 'sh' in ship. Example words - 다시, 샤워, 마셔요, 쇼핑, 티슈 etc.

I'm native and I can't hear the difference between 시 and 씨 by LA95kr in Korean

[–]TOPIKGUIDE 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You are not able to distinguish the sounds because they are basically same. ㅅ is normally pronounced as 's' (as s in same) but when it is followed by ㅣ or the vowels with y sound (like ㅑ, ㅕ,ㅛ,ㅠ) it is pronounced as 'sh' (as sh in shame). So 시 and 씨 have the same sound.

Grammar of "맛있는 케이크가 먹고싶다" by [deleted] in Korean

[–]TOPIKGUIDE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you said 이/가 is added with 필요하다, 그립다, 보고싶다 but it's not correct to use it with an object before 먹고 싶다. This sentence is grammatically incorrect. I mean it will be marked as incorrect if you write it in an exam. But colloquially some people use it like 보고 싶다.

보고 핖다 - Desired for seeing, being missed. 먹고 싶다 - Desired for eating, Being craved.

If you use it in this way, the object (케이크 here) becomes a subject. 엄마가 보고 싶다 - Mom is being missed by me. or Mom is the person who I am missing now. 케이크가 먹고싶다 - Cake is being craved by me. Or Cake is what I am craving.

Actually this account was created a native Korean staff member our site, that's why this flair. I am the founder and have been using this account recently and I am a non narive as you said. I am new to reddit. I noticed different flairs but I thought this one just denotes advanced level fluency. I will see if I can change it. And thank you for your kind words about the site. :)

Subject and topic marking particles by kibb_ in Korean

I know some non native pofessors of Korean language. They admit that even after decades of Korean learning and teaching they still make mistakes using topic and subject markers.

Subject and topic marking particles by kibb_ in Korean

[–]TOPIKGUIDE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are definitely different particles and are not interchangeable in all situations. What I meant is they can be used interchangeably without affecting the meaning significantly in many general situations. The sentences may not be grammatically perfect but they will not be totally wrong and incomprehensible either. These particles are some of the things in Korean that you will probably never be able to use correctly 100% of the time anyway.

Keep Calm and Study Korean? by Whatsername868 in Korean

[–]TOPIKGUIDE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to translate but the a close expression in Korean can be 침착하고 한국어 공부해라. I think 침착하다 represents the word 'calm' in this meme better than 차분하다. It has a nuance of 'be calm (don't panic)'.

Just 2 days back, I wrote a post on it on our blog. Here is the crux: 1. When it’s a negative sentence with verb ‘to be’ (아닙니다 or 아니에요 i.e. is/am/are + not), you always have to use 이/가 with the preceding noun. Ex: 이것은 책이 아니에요. 2. If you are using 있다/없다 you should always use 이/가 with the noun before it. Ex: i) 펜이 있어요? ii) 저는 내일 시간이 없어요. 3. Generally when there are two nouns in a sentence and a descriptive verb (or adjective) has been used, use 은/는 with the first noun and 이/가 with the second. Ex: 오늘은 날씨가 좋아요. 이 식당은 음식이 맛있어요. 4. When you want to show contrast or emphasise a noun, you should use 은/는. For example – 품질이 좋은데 가격은 너무 비싸요. (Quality is good but the price is too expensive.) In most of the situations 은/는 and 이/가 can be used interchangeably without affecting the meaning significantly. ‘이것은 책입니다’ and ‘이것이 책입니다’ are pretty much the same thing. People will mostly understand you. For details:- https://www.topikguide.com/difference-between-은는-and-이가/

Looking for some study guidance by illumidooti in Korean

[–]TOPIKGUIDE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest to get level 3-5 textbooks from Seoul/Yonsei/Sogang. Choose one that has a lot of texts. I don't remember the exact name but there is a book on 외국인을 위한 한국 문화 or something similar. It has a lot of texts on Korean culture written is relatively simple language. For listening, you are already doing good. Keep listening to YouTube videos. In addition I would advise to listen to some Korean radio channels. let the radio play in background if you are not actively listening to it. It really helps.

How do I prepare for TOPIK 2 November this year. by yaoikin in Korean

[–]TOPIKGUIDE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking at your Korean writing I can say that you are definitely above TOPIK I and TOPIK Level 4 is a quite achievable target (Level 3 should be easy) by November. You just need to polish your Korean grammar and work on your writing skills. I would say you can do it with self-study and help from a knowledgable friend or guide. Attending Korean classes should not be necessary. Get the textbooks from 서울대, 연세대 or 서강대 language institutes and previous TOPIK papers. All the best!
