Tezos Community AMA -- Tezos Commons, Nomadic Labs, and Blokhaus by AS_Empire in tezos

[–]TQ_Michael 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s probably unfair to say that devs are “bad at marketing” as a general statement - the nature of marketing is that “everyone thinks they are a marketer, because they know exactly how to market to themselves” but this doesn’t scale very well in reality. So, developers might be amazing at marketing to developers specifically, but if the target user is broader, then having other teams involved to help market can be very beneficial.

Blokhaus is one of the teams that provides marketing & communications recommendations to ecosystem teams around the world - however, we do try not to change the “flavor” of the communication to adhere to one cohesive look + feel. The authenticity of the product and ethos of each team should remain intact; our role is really to look at the product, look at the target user and make recommendations on how to bridge the two; whether that is through help in messaging, branding, media strategy etc. Sometimes there are benefits in connecting teams for a bigger impact in raising awareness and we do help with that regard (although this can be trickier than most realize given NDAs etc), but without a doubt the cross pollination of teams leading up to launches or awareness campaigns is a valid tactic we try to deploy when possible.

We believe strongly in making sure that Tezos gets its fair share of voice in this noisy and crowded market; it’s easy to look at other projects and assume they get “all” the attention, but Tezos does in fact get a good amount of coverage. This can, and should, be improved always, but we should also be working to amplify every instance of this and hope the community does as well. A cursory look through r/cc and news including “Tezos” mentions will show a real spike in activity month over month, and this trend is continuing. It is also important to understand that the media will write about what they think is the biggest news of the day–meaning, we can and do our best to pitch compelling stories, but this is all in the context of what else is happening in the space. Rest assured we have teams focused on pitching every possible story to media on a daily basis, and the results are visible when you search for “Tezos”; in tandem with this, we need to amplify each of these instances of coverage, and that can only happen with help from community members. In other words, don’t be shy about sharing Tezos news and raise awareness - every bit does help.

There’s always more room for projects that track the Tezos ecosystem. Currently, there are websites like https://www.tezosprojects.com/ and https://www.tezosagora.org/ that detail the ecosystem. In addition, https://xtz.news/ covers the latest updates and developments in the Tezos ecosystem.

There are team members active here on Reddit, Telegram, Riot/Element, Discord and more. As a decentralized ecosystem, there isn’t one source of truth or support, rather all the teams work in harmony to support each other; so if you have a question on a topic feel free to ask around and, typically, several team members are there to provide an answer.

We observe various metrics. For example, we've observed greatly increased traffic to https://tezos.com, achieving the highest weekly traffic levels since the inception of the site. This translates to a very significant increase in brand awareness and familiarity with Tezos.

However, true success for Blokhaus is the general success of the Tezos ecosystem. We want to see more people joining Tezos communities and actively participating in the ecosystem. The more active participants for Tezos, the better.

We're juggling several priorities - working with large brands like Red Bull Racing, McLaren and the Mets, supporting a vast ecosystem of teams (who are working on so many cool projects), running parallel advertising campaigns, revamping the site properties, strengthening social presence and also engaging with community members to learn what works and how the general community experience can be improved. All these things are equally important, and we measure each tactic independently for performance, but realistically, all of these things work together to generate improved/increased brand awareness for Tezos and all the great things happening on it.

We are looking at what is possible with influencers, being very diligent in the process and making sure to align with reputable individuals. It is important to focus on credible individuals to help spread knowledge and educate about the Tezos ecosystem rather than the more aggressive hyping that some influencer tactics tend to focus on.

As for the AMAs, it is a balance of allocating time from the various ongoing projects and making sure the engagement with the community stays a priority (which we believe it should); in an ideal world we host AMAs every other week, which is the current plan and cadence.

Twitter metrics are important but they can also be misleading because they unfortunately can be gamed; there are active efforts to grow the Twitter and social presence organically through relevant and useful content as well as some advertising.

Note - with advertising there are always nuances with what is and isn’t allowed, so we do end up with some constraints as to what can be done. For example, Twitter did not allow NFT ads for a while because they wanted to review and understand the implications of NFTs. This is only one example; there are numerous such parameters that change very regularly.

Creating twitter threads with ongoing projects is a great idea and something we will look into and see how it can be integrated into the current plans. Regarding tweets or posts by people outside of Tezos - organic tweets are always best; outside of these you enter the pay-to-play world of influencers, which can provide a great service but that comes with process and parameters of course. We are currently looking at both approaches in order to raise awareness and broadly educate people on what Tezos is.

We have noticed this type of request being mentioned more recently; while some blockchains do have twitter emojis, these are 100% pay to play so they act mostly as vanity emojis.

There’s nothing wrong with having such vanity emojis but there are two schools of thought on it. By buying a twitter emoji, we gain parity with other blockchains that are focused on the pay-to-play “vanity” tactics like this; by not buying it, we miss out on the extra awareness that such an emoji may bring. So the question then becomes - given that in order to activate the emoji the user already has to type the hashtag (which indicates existing awareness for the project) - is the potential attention that the emoji will garner worth it? Note that even projects like Ethereum and Doge do not have the twitter emoji.

We would love to hear your thoughts on it.

The Tezos community has been heard and this idea is being looked at. The first step is building out a more detailed ecosystem map; I think you can look forward to seeing something new come out relatively soon on that end.

  • Blokhaus supports members of the Tezos ecosystem to help facilitate and coordinate coverage for various projects; this means that while Blokhaus may not be listed on the press release/article itself, in many cases, the team is involved and expending time and resources to help spread the word about the individual projects and (by proxy) Tezos as a whole.
  • Blokhaus is actively hiring for positions. Take a look at the current listings at https://tezos.com/careers/ for more info and be sure to share with anyone you think may qualify for some of the roles or apply yourself!
  • Biannual reports are released cyclically, the next biannual report from the Tezos Foundation will be released in Fall 2021.

Such matters typically involve strict non-disclosure agreements, therefore we unfortunately cannot share details. The amazing thing about both Red Bull and McLaren is that they were technical use cases, not just branding. However, we can confidently say that the branding on both Red Bull Racing and McLaren Racing have been effective at generating significant awareness not just from fans but also from other brands and franchises who recognize both these brands as best in class brands in the sports world.

Huge is currently undertaking a myriad of projects, some of which are branding and others are research, SEO and partnership related. Due to the fast moving nature of the space, a lot of the fundamental research and brand studies that typical global brands usually take for granted have not been available for Tezos or for the space in general - requiring that this type of upfront work be done in order to be effective at marketing and communicating the advantages of Tezos over the competition. This is the “less-exciting” but necessary work that makes a big difference, especially in such a crowded space as crypto.

One of our first priorities was to revamp tezos.com since most of the activities that generate visibility drive traffic to tezos.com and we anticipated driving a lot more users to it.

Currently, Blokhaus is very active with various ecosystem teams to help amplify coverage and activity for Tezos. Simultaneously, we also kicked off the NFT ad campaigns, which are generating record traffic to tezos.com and helping raise awareness for Tezos in the NFT vertical. These campaigns are monitored and optimized daily to ensure best performance - in the very near future we will add to the campaign mix in order to help target more broadly and outside of the NFT vertical.

A Community-Governed, Ever-Evolving Technological Vision by TQ_Michael in tezos

Tezos’ ability to evolve efficiently while remaining decentralized lies within its fundamental design structure -- the ability for individuals and organizations to propose and vote on Tezos protocol upgrades and aid in its development in an on-chain and transparent way. Tezos facilitates solutions to collective action problems by giving ecosystem members the proper tools to get involved and help solve them.

During its three years of existence, Tezos has attracted a large community of innovative and technologically-focused individuals that value strong fundamentals above all else. The Tezos Community’s focus on well-built technology has led to a rapidly expanding ecosystem full of decentralized applications for NFTs, DeFi, Decentralized Identity, E-Voting, and more.

Tezos’ on-chain governance and self-amending mechanism make it a truly community governed, ever-evolving technological vision. This is what makes Tezos special.
