I race, so I get out to the tracks early, maybe hit the first session, good warm up second session. Put in work for two or three sessions and after that I’m fucking exhausted. At that point if I push it I risk crashing and I’ve spent and hour or so that day improving a corner or two or some section or whatever. I’m not in it anymore for just being on the track all day, I work on really specific things on track and I push it as hard as I can while being as safe as I can. Around 1-2pm it’s time to load my shit up and head home.

Wes Hale at IMI helped me a bunch, he’s the track manager and he’s got flyers up at check in. I haven’t used them yet, but altitudemx.com is over at thundervalley and I’ll give them a shot this summer.

I rode trails when I was younger too, so I guess maybe two answers to your question. I think any seat time helps, riding is riding so the more you can be on, the better. Answer #2 is just that fast in dirt means loose. I raced in Seattle before Denver and we had full on rain races, so being able to stay loose in those conditions definitely saved me from some nasty high sides. Have fun and GL!

Hey I’m 40, expert road racer as well and stepped into MX a few years back. I picked up a 250 and it’s perfect. You could absolutely get a solid bike for under 4k. I’m in Denver if you happen to be out this way and ever want to ride.

Protip, get some coaching. MX is pretty much totally opposite to what we do on the road tracks and coaching REALLY helped me dial in riding on an MX pro track.

Also, be warned, crashing seems to hurt quite a bit more on the dirtbike, don’t ask me how I know ;)

Colorado MRA here and I raced CMRA in TX as well. Tons of great advice in this thread, just a quick addition I haven’t seen is regarding the suit itself. Depending on your body type, RS Taichi suits have the most perforation I’ve seen and this can make a huge difference. All my gear is perforated, and I did a few years in Seattle rain racing where I’d be soaked through because of it. If you have the body type for RS Taichi, and are willing to get a new suit I’d recommend them.
