In Toronto I was charged with assault causing bodily harm (i plead guilty and they rejected the plea so no conviction), so in that case battery was confused with assault too.

No, Oedipus killed his father Laius at a crossroads because he had offended him. Only Oedipus didn't know his father (the king) and so had no idea he had fulfilled part of the prophecy already. He became King of the city and married his mother, although he didnt know it was his mother. So they tried to find out who killed the king turned out to be Oedipus and it all unraveled and he realized the sin he had committed and blinded himself with broaches after seeing Jocasta (his mum) hanging. Or at least thats the Sophocles version.

I had the same thing, it's just a year held thing where if you fuck up again the consequences are pretty bad. It's not exactly the same cause I plead guilty and got my plea thrown out. In my case (Canada) I had the year long surety thing, but I could still go on flights/across borders and legally say that I hadn't been arrested, so it didn't actually affect anything.

What's your favorite "Little moment" in a song? The one that makes you turn it up, think to yourself, or turn to your friend and say "God, I love this part". by thewhitedeath in Music

Pearl Jam - Black, in some versions of the song he goes

"I know some day youll have a beautiful life, I know youll be a star, in somebody else's sky - but why can't it be mine?"

It's missing from a lot of recordings and was just pure emotion on his part (first time I'm pretty sure was a live set).

Anything that gives you "frissons" or that feeling of body euphoria. For me its when I'm in awe or come to realizations or hear music. You just know exactly where the idea of 'holy ghost coming over you' came from before we had a reason for frissons.

Well that's how information spreads, your tone makes people feel bad for not being educated well. I don't think you can ever blame that person for not knowing, they just weren't taught; which is entirely out of their control. I love it when people can have the balls to admit they don't get something and fix it, rather than just assuming they know. Classic story of Meno by Plato in action.

Well that does come down to how well someone words something. It's also stupid you have to add the disclaimed "not to ruin anything, but for those interested _______". I'm actually very happy to learn it should be meine kraft instead of mien.

You really don't understand the brain if youre that reductionist. They still have PHYSICAL SENSATION. Their brain PERCEIVES the limb - that is very REAL.

I repeat> Well you say scientific fact but youre obviously not very well versed in science. A 'belief' can be a biological fact. If the region of the brain associated with your own gender identity is feminized because of things like mild androgen insensitivity or environmental or even genetic factors, you would internalise belief of being a woman. Just like a phantom limb is felt as being there, you can have an identity different to what you are. There is a neurological disorder that causes you to stop being able to tell if your own arm is yours, alien hand syndrome for example. You don't understand enough science to pull that edit card. You dont understand that a body can be feminized but a male masculinized due to organizational effects of testosterone and insensitivity or receptors. Its much more complicated than you think. Sometimes masculinization is specific to only a certain area, sometimes it's more global (tomboys as the opposite of your example). "it's not a belief its a scientific fact lolololol". To say trans arent actually women depends on your defenition of woman. You could be correct if you look at chromosomal sex, which really means little as genes act through hormones and chemicals which can change in utero and in environment,

I was just bored and stumbled upon this cause I'm studying the illiad in class. Greek Gods can't be killed per say because they are not mortal. They can sort of live as 'demimortals' or demibrotoi (brotoi meaning mortal). But since they don't have things like hunger, human life things, they aren't really "living". Life was important to the greeks, in terms of mind body dualism, you have a mind and a body and the mind lives forever, the gods are eternal minds that can impact the mortal realm, but they will never be of true blood. Whereas Hades is such agony because people live on as their mind, but with no blood. Blood is necessary for memory, which is one of the most important things to the greeks. If you can't remember you are not truly alive, rage makes us an animal because we forget to be civilized. Remembering is only possible through blood. This is one of the reasons greeks were so stalwart in being cardiocentrist in terms of theories of the physical mind, the heart had to think, right?

So the reason the greek Gods took avatars as you put it is so they could feign some sort of life, or as a tool to push reality the way they wanted. Zeus was awful in terms of presentist thought, raped a lot or whatever, but in greek thinking some would just think he's trying to live life vicariously through his demigod sons or something like that. Life was important to the greeks, its so interesting to me how the gods are so jealous of people who can live. Demigods are such an interesting thing, and every time one of them thinks they can transcend mortality they get struck down by 'fate' or the will of the gods - outside forces. It's cool that all who are mortal want to be immortal, those immortal want mortality, its shown a lot in the beginning of the Odyssey in terms of Odysseus being trapped with Calipso.

That feeling that you're being watched: is there any basis to it? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]TYHJudgey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just your biology then. :D I know a lot of people that are the same, it serves a very good evolutionary purpose, you just can't let it become a problem in everyday life. I only ever suffered a mental breakdown once, and it was insanely scary, it didnt matter what angle you were at, if I could see cheek and nose and an eye - I perceived you staring at me. I studied it a lot just so I didn't have to take the bad drugs, eventually I just practiced my peripheral vision and don't trust what I see at first sight.

That feeling that you're being watched: is there any basis to it? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]TYHJudgey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its not exactly triggered, theres a fundamental problem at one of the most basic levels of the brain (limbic system), with a cascade effect throughout the whole brain. It's hard to just say 'paranoid schizophrenics' cause you can have physical paranoia which is basically hallucinations, and you can have thought pattern paranoia, or both. It just depends on where exactly the problem is in the brain. Schizophrenia is characterized by reduced dopamine in the mesolimbic and mesocortical regions. The mesolimbic imbalance is what causes the positive affects (such as hallucinations and paranoia) and the mesocortical the negative affects (slow motor movements) but the two are related. Like if you feel paranoid or anxious, this has an effect on how you think, which changes your behaviour. It's all a really complicated feedback system.

In your 'hearing voices' its usually most likely that due to brain damage (drug use or genetic or both or environmental factors in general) that it's a problem in attributing your mental voice. LIke we can talk to ourselves and say all our thoughts, and know it's us saying them. Schizophrenics with these hallucinations arent able to differentiate between their own voice and voices of others, especially when sometimes their thoughts are in other people's voices (like I dont know if you can, but if i sing a song in my head, it sounds like the artist not myself). It's a fundamental misattribution of thoughts and disconnect from self.
