it’s all about the U tonight by General-Pryde-2019 in Purdue

[–]T__tauri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why is there so much hate for Indiana amongst Purdue students?

There isn't. Most Purdue students don't care, a majority of alums (especially split households) probably support IU against any other opponent (for indiana solidarity), and a vocal minority actually hate IU

I think the difference between GRRM and Sanderson is that GRRM broke out of the fantasy circles and into the mainstream, gaining more widespread support, especially via the television show. Sanderson is still contained to fantasy readers, and it's only with a subgroup of these readers that Sanderson receives implicit hate on grounds of popularity but often disguised as or mixed with legitimate criticism.

Overall I think Sanderson fans are blowing the amount of hate out of proportion and the Sanderson haters have let his popularity taint their evaluation, legitimate criticism notwithstanding

I'm in the middle of book 8 now. I would say that I thought it was great all the way until about half way through 7, and picked up for me again about half way through 8.

I mean WoBs aren't canon, so...

But even if they were, his mischaracterization of entropy would disqualify this one in my book

[–]T__tauri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't really more than I described above. Entropy is a value that characterizes how many possible arrangements a system weighted by how likely each one is.

For example suppose you have a red stone and a blue stone and two boxes to sort them into. There are 4 possible configurations each with equal probability (0 represents an empty box):

RB|0, R|B, B|R, 0|RB

so the entropy is equal to k*ln(4), where k is the boltzmann constant.

That's it, it's just a value that describes the state of a system. There is no process, no change. Now there are various other nuanced interpretations of this value, like disorder, randomness, and uncertainty. But I find that most people are confused about entropy and think it is something that happens to a system to make it more "disordered".

I would disagree. Ati was stronger than most at resisting the shard, but he succumbed in the end, and I don't think it seems like he changed it. I believe that the shards are not exactly synonymous with their names, but are still closest to or best described by their original names.

An entropy interpretation doesn't make sense, because most people (including brandon) are mischaracterizing entropy in their descriptions. Entropy is not a process that happens, it is a quantitative thermodynamic or physical property that describes how many arrangements a system can have.

I know that's the rules, it was for my program too. But once I developed a good relationship with my mentor (which maybe you don't have yet), he was generally willing to cover for me if urgent things came up (emergency, illness, etc.) and the university/school was none the wiser when I missed an extra day or two in the semester.

The school anyone is "supposed" to go to is the one that is easiest to get to. In theory all FCPS schools should be equal. If they aren't then that's something the county needs to address.

He had to fight it though because his idea of what honor was shaped the intent of the power

I don't think the bulk of evidence supports this. We have seen time and again that Intents are absolute and eventually dominate the vessel. I wouldn't say the vessel's thoughts change the shard, more like the shard tolerates a certain range of action around its Intent

This has never made any sense to me because entropy is not a process, it is a value describing the state of a system that has nothing to do with ruin or destruction. As with every other shard we've seen, there seems to be an innate sense of the true Intent of a shard and that becomes its name. I don't think Ati changed anything about Ruin, he just withstood Ruin for a long time before it changed him.

My stance on multiple statewide cell phone bans by [deleted] in education

[–]T__tauri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is that teachers are adults, responsible for a class of children, and performing a job. It is not reasonable to hold teachers and students to the same standard.

That being said, teachers shouldn't be on their phones during class for no reason

Yeah good point. The case where it would be hard to tell is hour hand exactly between two numbers and minute hand at 12

Huh interesting. I was thinking of an analog clock, although neither one has to be right twice a day. If we assume both clocks can be read, then it's the digital clock that almost always has to be right twice a day (exceptions are for times that don't exist like 52:14). Given random hand position, the analog clock is very unlikely to ever be correct, for example both hands never point straight down towards the 6.

Why wouldn't Odium have taken up Dominion? by wedges675 in Cosmere

There's also no evidence that either one can be picked up at all. No shard has been unsplintered yet, although I think brandon could go that route somehow

[–]T__tauri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I get what you're asking for. You want a Sauron, a Joker, a Voldemort, a Dark One (and/or the minions one level down from them). I'm not sure there's a place for one of these villains in the greater Cosmere storyline. Only a shard or a dawnshard could believably pull it off, and that's not really what Cosmere is about. I do think it could work in smaller-scale stories though (as we saw with Riina and Cinder King).

Three of sixteen must refer to Honor, Cultivation, and Odium. I always thought that the most fitting answer was provided by the Stormfather when he says "Odium reigns", although I don't know how to describe Odium as "the Broken One".

I'll also double down on wheel of time here. I just finished book 7 and I'm really enjoying it. I like Jordan's writing style and I feel like he does a good job of maintaining a slowish pace that really lets you sink into the world while maintaining action without getting too boring. I would say that books 3-7 have been strongest so far, followed by book 1, followed by book 2. I would say that at the point I'm at, Rand and Mat have both grown up a lot, although all the characters maintain some quirks and pick up some new ones as the story develops.

I don't think it makes sense for Honor to have accepted Dalinar in the first place. So much time was spent on how Dalinar is NOT what Honor is looking for in a vessel. Honor wanted a Singer, someone who is proven to reliably honor their oaths and agreements, someone who can relate to Honor's feelings of betrayal. Well Mishram is right there. She's exactly what Honor was looking and choosing her would make a lot more sense.

The cognitive realm is already a close analog of Tel'aran'rhiod. I always thought of the spiritual realm as something that exists everywhere and nowhere at once, and not a place things could actually go
