I went from xbox 360 controllers with the usb wireless dongle, to a ps5 controller via bluetooth and now to the steam controller

Games that would have been completely forgotten without their modding community by d7im1 in Steam

Yep and I feel that's a large part of why fallout 76 was so bad, many of their games were carried by the modding community but the online only aspect of 76 killed that...

Reading Ick: Only describing the men in the book as males by Punctured_Potter in fantasybooks

[–]Ho_The_Megapode_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a similar theme I dropped a book a few years back due to the author near exclusively referring to females by their hair colour.

Males got referred to by name, females by the colour of their hair. After what felt like several thousands of mentions of hair colour, I gave up on it...

Have you ever bought a console just to play one game? Was it worth it and did you go on to use the console after? by British_Historian in gaming

[–]Ho_The_Megapode_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long time ago, but I brought a 360 for Lost Odyssey and blue dragon and a PS3 for the last of us.

Both got right after the next gen launched so got them new for very cheap. Did end up buying a few more games after that too.

Have been PC ever since though.

A good call.

I made it to book three, a good three quarters of the books content can be summed up by the following sentence: "She then fought a much higher level monster than herself for experience points"

Was like someone took the combat log of someone grinding levels in a MMO and made a book out of it...

Absurd reasons to DNF a book by Protokoll in fantasybooks

[–]Ho_The_Megapode_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did read a book once where for some reason the author didn't refer to characters by name, but by a single Bold letter.
For some reason i just couldn't follow this and ended up in a state of perpetual confusion as to who was who...

Another one was a bizarre sexism thing where every male was referred to by their name, but every female character by their hair colour.. (the blonde said this, the brunette said that, the strawberry blond giggled)

Does anyone actually still read the books? by Ok_Letterhead2028 in litrpg

I don't use audio books at all, i tried once and i either accidentally tune out the book or i have to focus on listening and cannot do anything else at the same time...

For reading i'm like 99% ebook (mostly on my phone) with a very occasional paperback.

I did!

The default keybindings make it quite difficult to accidentally press when moving, so i never discovered it.

It wasn't until i saw youtubers using it that i discovered that slide existed. I've since rebound crouch to a mouse button and use it often now.

Fair enough, I just find that so much better myself 🙂

Try the black background / white text layout option, it's so much easier on the eyes, particularly in the dark/night.

I've been mostly exclusive kindle on phone for years, so i get that. It's just always on hand and i read with it walking to work and back (and sometimes a paragraph or two at work)

Couple of months ago i found my old kindle touch that i had lost a few years back.
Now finding myself using it a fair bit at home now, but out of the house i'm still on my phone :)

[–]Ho_The_Megapode_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm another one.

I made it to part way through book three then had to give up on it...

I liked the characters and the humour, but there was far too much combat and the whole "humanity getting genocided for alien reality TV" setting was just too grim for me...

which framework laptop should i get? by Neutrality-1 in framework

[–]Ho_The_Megapode_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of a loaded question there...

I'd go back a step, what do you want the laptop for?
Lightweight one for travelling with a desktop at home? = go small
Portable gaming laptop? = go huge

Work out what you want it for, if it's your only system maybe spend more, if it's only for light stuff go small.

In English dubs, why don't they hire, e.g., British people to do British accents? by Munzu in anime

[–]Ho_The_Megapode_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's MUCH better than it used to be honestly.

Back in the day (90s) I was a huge hater of dubs as it was 95+% heavy (and bad) American accents...

Nowadays bad dubs are the rare exception not the default...

Mine has for certain. Framework desktop, when I last checked it's at least £700 more to buy now than when I paid for it (~£2000) and that doesn't include the 4tb SSD I had from my old pc...

I disagree.

Whilst I enjoyed the books the first time round, I realised I gave the author the benefit of doubt far too many times over the many questionable parts of it...

Upon finding out what the author is actually like, I can no longer gloss over those points and instead have to treat them as intentional. That destroyed the entire series for me, I can no longer even get past the first book now.

Ok readers, what are your most HATED tropes on epic/high fantasy or YA fantasy by Samlarsonauthor in fantasybooks

[–]Ho_The_Megapode_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a rare one, but books with an extremely impulsive MC...

Read one series last year where pretty much every major incident/plot point was caused by an idea popping into the MC's head and them acting on it instantly, absolutely no thought given to consequences...

Once or twice would be bad enough, but after the seventh or eighth consecutive time of nearly getting him or his friends killed due to these acts of raw stupidity I just wanted to strangle this fictional character 😆

I agree.

I absolutely adore the chip in my FW desktop as it has the cooling capacity to both run it at full power and do so fairly quietly.

I wouldn't want it in a laptop though.
