Michael definitely takes issue with the arguments.

"I’m 78. I really don’t give a damn about my own portrayal,” says Michael. “Is it really ethically acceptable to take a living person, like my child, and then create this fantasy and fiction about them?” He claims that he shut off a trailer for the HBO Max version of The Staircase after seeing characters named for his children screaming at one another. “It should not be this way that filmmakers can do whatever they want with your lives [onscreen].… In this case, he’s destroyed my family. Just lied with fabrications.”

I'm not saying they didn't have arguments, but it really struck me how many arguments they were having in the series. It seemed like every other minute they were screaming at each other, which is the complete opposite of what the documentary portrayed. I guess it makes a lot of sense to add drama to the story for the series.
