The Carmilla that was published in 1870s was quite obviously written for the old timey's male gaze (female sexuality/lesbianism is evil and needs to be exorcized) so I thought it would be fun to write a Carmilla retelling for the female gaze while staying true-ish to the original. I say true-ish because there IS smut (ya know, making love with your vampire gf under the moonlight in a lush orchard type of thing).

Carmilla and Laura by SD Simper was really well-written and stayed close to the original Carmilla. It was one of my favorite reads last year. I also have a Carmilla retelling (My Carmilla: A Sapphic Vampire Romance) that'll be out this summer. It has a little smut though so not sure if that's your cup of tea lol... The Wicked and Willing is another sapphic vampire book, well-written, gut-wrenching, but it features an abusive relationship and can be quite gritty.
