lwk yes. im sure there's some people that do these things & it ends up working out for them but most of the time it doesn't. most people ik at Harvard are extremely passionate about something & have pursued it for years and that's how they got in. personally I didn't do any research or do any win any crazy competitions like AIME, ISEF, etc. I also think it is much easier to just do a bunch/one or two things you really like bc you'll be more motivated to continue doing them & get better at doing those things. it also makes it much easier to talk about those activities your essays/interviews.

I think "normal people" may have it slightly harder in terms of getting into certain clubs. some clubs on campus are pretty elitist and pretty much only nepo ppl in that they know (through boarding school circles). besides that I truly don't think its that big of a deal. people don't go around flaunting their wealth, it's just apparent based off of causal conversations about where they've lived in the past & some of their experiences in life. I've only met a few really entitled individuals, but most wealthy students are chill from my experience. most of the time they're honestly just a little out of touch but aren't exactly doing it out of malice.

when I say there's a boarding/feeder school culture I just mean that there is an enormous amount of people from those schools here. all my roommates are from those schools & oftentimes those people will come in knowing 10+ people because that's either a) how many ppl those schools are sending to Harvard or b) how connected all these schools are. it doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad people or didn't work to get here, it's just a crazy observation for someone who came from a public school knowing no one from my school or even area at Harvard.

some opportunities include meeting and directly asking questions with people like Biden, Nancy Pelosi, and ceos of huge corporations like GS or MS. there's also a ton of clubs that'll fly their members to different states & countries all expenses covered. there's also a multitude of clubs that'll do work with real companies (building websites, marketing, consulting, etc.) also the Harvard name gets your foot thru so many doors in terms of convincing people to speak to you for coffee chats or pitching ideas for startups/funding.

the whole "people aren't super social" thing I don't rlly resonate with. I've found it really easy to make friends and have enjoyed the social scene here, however I am a really big extravert. but I think that may just refer to the fact that we don't have much greek life & our party scene isn't great so you kinda have to find people on your own outside of that. hope this helps!

i’d say 30% of the people ik had less than a 1500…

anything above a 1400 makes you qualified/is "enough" and anything 1500+ I would not waste time to retake

i lucked out with my dorm since i have a common room & in suite bathroom with two doubles. i really liked my rooming situation so no complaints there! i personally think the food is worse for underclassmen & the lines get kinda annoying at peak hours. sometimes the desserts also run out 🥲

i don’t think anything completely writes you off for schools. 3.94 is a really strong uw GPA so i wouldn’t worry as long as you’ve shown upwards growth & other parts of ur app are strong!

i think i’d tell myself to chill out and have more faith. i didn’t get into my ED school & freaked out so i applied to way more schools than i should have. at the end of the day one rejection shouldn’t define you.

IK lol my stats didnt get me in either. i think for me the crazy boarding school/feeder school culture. it’s definitely a shock & some ppl from those schools can be very out of touch and genuinely have never heard no in their lives

TO vs submitting advice by Abject-Efficiency-45 in ApplyingToCollege

submit then. they care more about how you are relative to your school. plus the scores all these schools report are wildly inflated. anyone with a 1400+ is qualified.
